Self Defense Lessons

I never thought
I'd have to teach myself self defense
After all, society is supposed to be evolving.

I remember, the first time
I was nearly 11
When a boy, 18 years old
Came my way

I was in a book shop
Looking at the young adult novels
Holding a birthday cookie in my hand
When he crossed my path

He came up to me, knowing my age
Knowing how sick of him it was
To mess with me
He came closer, and pointed at a book

"This one suits you better"
His hand wrapped around my shoulder
He hugged me close

I wanted to punch him
My sister had taught me to
But now that it was actually happening
I couldn't

And now here I am again
Unable to defend myself
Helpless.
Vulnerable.
