long distance

Six months. One hundred and eighty-two days. Four thousand, three hundred and seventy-five hours. That's how long it had been since you'd seen your boyfriend in person. Since you'd been able to kiss him and hug him, to love him properly. The two of you were not strangers to the long-distance relationship, but covid was making it significantly harder. Now, not only was Tom working halfway across the world, you couldn't even really go see him if you wanted, with all of the restrictions that were in place. Even with skyping or calling every day, it wasn't the same, and all you wanted was him in bed next to you.

"Hi, sweetheart," Tom's voice floated up from your computer as he connected, breaking you out of your trance.

You couldn't help the smile that spread across your face as his pretty one took up the screen, "Hi, baby. I miss you."

His smile mimicked yours, the small crinkles by the corners of his eyes appearing, "Beat me to it. I miss you, too, love."

It was silent for a moment as you stared at each other through the screen. Tom looked tired, but you couldn't blame him. You knew that he was working long hours, working on the newest Spider-Man movie, and this was like the third project in a row that he was working on without stop. His hair was getting long again, curls growing out and falling into his face in a mess, leaving you jealous that you couldn't run your fingers through them. And his eyes — those wide, pretty brown eyes of his that you could never get enough of — looked especially tired. It was in these moments that you just wanted to baby him; all you wanted was to be able to wrap your boy up in a tight hug and never let him go. As silly as it sounded, you wanted to protect him.

Though you were pretty sure that you already knew the answer, you asked, "How are you, bub?"

Tom hummed quietly, leaning forward to rest his chin in his palm, "I'm okay. I'm having a lot of fun shooting the movie, but I'm tired. Today was super long, and it just feels like I haven't had a proper break in forever. And I miss you. I miss you so much it hurts."

As if on cue, your heart twisted in your chest, face falling slightly, "I miss you, too, baby. So goddamn much. You don't have too much longer, though, right?"

Nodding, Tom's hand ran through his hair, but his curls just fell back into his face, "Two more weeks."

"Then just two more weeks — only fourteen days — till you're home, and I'm able to hug you and kiss you. What are your plans for when you're back? 'M sure you wanna see your family."

"Mhm, but I think we're planning to have a dinner a day or two after I'm back. I just know I'm gonna be super tired and jetlagged for a few days."

Your eyes softened and you hummed to acknowledge that you were listening, "You deserve a break, Tom. You've been working so hard. I'm so proud of you, but it's okay to take a break, ya know?"

Tom felt the tears that were threatening to spill over his lashes, the lump in his throat forming; he was proud of himself, and he knew you were, too, but it helped to hear that. Especially coming from you. He shifted his eyes away from the screen, feeling embarrassed that he'd gotten choked up, voice soft, "I know. I'm just ready to be home with you and do absolutely nothing together."

"We can definitely do that, love," you reassured him, "I'll make you your favorite meal when you come home, and then we'll just cuddle and do nothing together."

This brought the smile back to his face, his eyes lighting up slightly at your statement, "Ya promise?"

You giggled and held your pinky finger up to the camera, "I promise, baby."

"I'm gonna hold you to that, love," he gave you a real, genuine smile again as he also lifted his pinky into view. Just because you were thousands of miles away from each other didn't mean you couldn't keep up with the little quirks the two of you had. Looking at you intently, Tom asked, just like always, "How was your day? I know it's late there." He was right; it was much later for you, but you didn't care as long as you got to talk to your boy.

"It was fine," you replied, shrugging your shoulders, "didn't do much. Tess and I went for a walk and I ran some errands. But that was it." Having heard her name, Tessa's head perked up from where she was laying at the foot of the bed. You took notice and patted the empty space next to you, "C'mere, sweet girl. Your dad wants to say hi." After circling the spot she wanted to lay in a few times, she finally sat next to you, her body pressed against your leg. In all honesty, Tessa was the only thing that kept you sane when Tom was away — she missed him just as much as you did, and she loved a good snuggle when you both needed it.

Tilting your laptop down, you were able to angle your screen so Tom could see his puppy, too. Tom's eyes lit up again when he saw her, and called her name to get her attention, "Tess! Tessa!" It took a moment before she realized where the sound was coming from, but finally realized that Tom's face was on the screen, and started wagging her tail. "Hi, darling!"

Scratching behind her ears, you pressed a kiss to the top of Tessa's head, "She misses you, too. Ya know, she's a pretty good substitute for a snuggle when you're gone."

"Oi!" Tom exclaimed, pursing his lips out in a pout, arms crossing over his chest.

"Can you blame me?" you giggled as you watched him try to keep up the pout.

Tom let out an overdramatic, exasperated huff, "I guess not. Better than you going to someone else, I 'spose."

"Mhm, that's what I thought," you teased. It was hard not to tease him from time to time, especially when he got all cute and pouty like he was now.

After Tom told you about his day, the two of you ended up playing video games together. That was until Tom heard the loud yawn that came out of your mouth, "Love, it's nearly four for you, you need to get some sleep."

Honestly, you hadn't even realized how tired you were until your boyfriend pointed it out. Glancing at the clock, it prompted another yawn from you, but you weren't quite ready to say goodbye yet, "I don't wanna hang up. Miss you too much."

Tom did his best to hold back a laugh as you struggled to even keep your eyes open. An idea crossed his mind, and he figured it was the next best thing to actually being with you, "I need to go to bed, too. How 'bout we fall asleep together?" It was something that you'd done before when the missing was too much, but it didn't happen often, so the times you did end up falling asleep together over the phone were appreciated. It wasn't the same as having him next to you in bed and being able to cuddle into his side, feel his warm skin against yours while he whispered how much he loved you, but it would do. For now, anyway.

"Yes please," you mumbled, already moving to get comfortable in bed, pulling the blankets up over your body.

"Okay, love. I gotta wash my face and brush my teeth, but I'll be right back. Don't fall asleep on me."

Agreeing, you struggled to keep your eyes open as Tom's face disappeared from the screen. You could hear shuffling in the background as he got ready for bed, and only minutes later he was back in view, "Okay, I'm back, baby. You still awake?"

You were, in fact, still awake, but only barely, so you mumbled out an, "Mhm, 'm awake."

Tom laughed, knowing you well enough to know that you were on the edge of sleep. There was more rustling as Tom got underneath the covers, head resting against his pillow as he stared at you through the screen. This was nice, but nothing beat actually being able to fall asleep with you in his arms.

His heart swelled as you mumbled an "I love you" before you finally closed your eyes, and it wasn't long until he could hear you snoring on the other side.

"I love you, too, sweetheart. Not long now til we're together."
