Derek ran into Grey-Sloan memorial and immediately saw Richard

"Richard, what happened to Ellie?" He asked

"Derek, let's go to your office" Richard said

"No, tell me now!" Derek said, this time louder

"Derek" Richard pulled at Derek's arm and pulled him to the side "Ellis got into a car accident. She was badly injured" Richard started to explain and saw Derek's eyes widening in fear "She broke her back. She broke T6, which left her paralyzed below-"

"Below her chest" Derek gasped

"I'll bring you to her room" Richard said

"Where are Zola and Bailey?" Derek asked concerned

"It was only Ellis and the nanny. The other kids are at Alex' house" Richard said

Derek and Richard made their way over to the peds floor and arrived at Ellis' room. Derek started crying at the sight of his youngest daughter in the massive brace covering her torso and neck, the tubes and wires which were attached to her body, the monitors beeping steadily as she slept. He looked to where Meredith was curled around her daughter and slowly walked over to his wife.

"Mer.." Derek whispered "Meredith, please wake up" His voice cracked

"Derek?" She sounded disorientated but didn't let go of the little girl who was asleep in her embrace

"I'm here, what the hell happened" He asked

"She was in an accident, Der.." Meredith started "She broke her back- it.. oh my" Meredith started sobbing

Derek and Meredith stood there, both felt broken as they looked at their battered youngest daughter

"Complete or incomplete?" Derek asked

"Complete spinal cord injury at T6.." Meredith's voice cracked "Possible that she can't control her bladder and bowels, she hasn't complained about the catheter" Meredith sadly told him

"Oh my-" Derek gasped "So no possible improvement?" He instantly forgot all his medical knowledge

Meredith sadly shook her head "Tom put on this brace.. Derek, she looks so hurt" Meredith quietly and desperately said

"She'll be okay. She's our little miracle, she'll be ok" Derek held Meredith's hand

"She told me she didn't want everything to change" Meredith totally broke down

"She'll pull through" Derek said "She will pull through" he muttered trying to assure himself while pulling meredith into his embrace

After consoling one another, he pulled away and wiped his tears, "Jo and Alex took Zola and Bailey to their house, do you want to go and get them, take them home and I will stay with Ellis?" Derek asked.

"I can't leave her Derek" Meredith immediately said

"I would rather stay here too. I'll ask Alex if the kids can stay" Derek said and left the room to call Alex

"Hey, Shep. How's Ellis?" Alex sounded concerned

"I don't even know Alex.. Her life just got switched around and no one can turn it back"

"I'm sorry, Derek.." Alex said "Me and Jo can watch Zola and Bailey so you and Mer both can stay there if you want" Alex offered

"Thanks Alex. Did you tell them?" Derek asked

"We told them that Ellis was at the hospital. Zola kept receiving texts from people asking what was going on and she started to ask questions" Alex explained. "Do you have any more news?"

"She broke her back. It's a complete spinal cord injury at T6.." Derek's heart broke just as much as the first time he heard it

"Oh-" Alex gasped

"It's bad" Derek agreed

"Don't hesitate to let us know if we can help you. We can bring the kids to school tomorrow and bring you fresh clothes and some stuff for Ellis" Alex offered

"Would you mind bringing the kids? I think we should explain what's happening. I'm sure they wanna see their sister" Derek said

"Of course, Derek. We'll bring them tomorrow and we'll bring Ellis' pajamas and some toys and bears" Alex said

"Thank you so much, Alex. Tell the kids we love them" Derek said

"I will, Derek. Tell Mer and Ellis that we love them"

"I will" Derek said and ended the phone call

Derek slowly walked back to Ellis' room. He saw his wife holding onto his small daughter for dear life

Derek grabbed a blanket and covered Meredith and Ellis up before taking a seat on the chair directly next to the bed

He was looking at his daughter who almost disappeared in the big bed with all these wires, the huge brace and all the medical equipment surrounding her

He was scared. He was scared of what would happen in their family but his daughter is strong, his family is strong. They would survive this all.
