X - Such a Night

On Saturday the whole gang had to go to a wedding. One of the Brumly Boys was getting married and we had to go so we wouldn't cause controversy and because according to Darry it was "the right thing to do".

We had to wear our fancy shirts and pants, which weren't very fancy, because we heard through the grapevine that it was supposed to be a formal event. I didn't quite understand how that even came to be because the Brumly Boys had absolutely zero money and intelligence.

Johnny and I were getting ready in my room and we couldn't figure out how to tie our ties. Soda and Steve were too busy downstairs to help us, so we had to wing it.

I remembered reading about how to tie ties in a book, so I tried to remember what it said. I didn't remember much. Just a few things, but Johnny was kind of distracting me from what I needed to be focusing on.

Finally, after many attempts, we decided to try to tie each others ties to see if that was any easier.

"Alright so you have to do a loop and knot, right?" Johnny said seeking confirmation.

"I think so." I replied.

He walked up to be and put the tie around my neck. His hands brushed on my chest and I could hear him softly breathing. His brow was furrowed in concentration.

I started to sweat, which led to the electric tension humming in the air.

The tension almost reminded me of an electric fence. It looked harmless but if you interacted with it, it likely wouldn't end well.

His strong, yet delicate hands continued to tie my tie and I started to panic. Gosh, did I love him. It was so hard for me not to show my attraction to him when he was so close.

All of a sudden his hands paused and we locked eyes.

Our faces slowly migrated towards each other and our noses were almost touching. I could feel the tension rise and fall in rapid, yearning patterns.

We stayed there for only a few seconds before...
Steve and Soda opened the door.

I panicked and threw myself backwards onto the ground away from Johnny, landing on the hard floor. He stood there stunned.

Steve and Soda were gaping at us not knowing what to say.

"My god you guys scared me." I said after a long silence.

"So you threw yourself on the ground?" Sodapop questioned.

"Yeah just a reflex I guess," I responded, "I was really concentrating on tying Johnny's tie."

"Yeah, by the way do y'all need help with that?" Steve asked.

"That's what we came up here to do, help y'all with your ties." Sodapop explained, very suspicious of what he saw.

Steve and Soda did end up helping us with our ties and Johnny and I pretended like nothing had happened, like usual. I couldn't help but wonder why he never protested or seemed uncomfortable with our moments of tension.

Soda and Steve left after helping us with our ties and I couldn't help but overhear bits and pieces of their conversation.

"...always interrupted" Soda whispered.
"...keep getting closer..." Steve mumbled back.

Finally we arrived at the wedding. The names of the "happy couple" were Rich Stewart and Jennifer Thompson. It was an plain, ordinary wedding held at a old chapel. It was pretty much what you would expect from a member of the Brumly Boys, or really any greaser.
