"Valyrie.....Valyrie...it's morning". A soft voice rings in my head, gradually becoming clearer as my mind awakens. I feel a hand on my shoulder gently shaking me awake from my deep slumber. Inhaling deeply, my heavy, sleepy eyes slowly open expecting to see Lady Dimitrescu. "G'morning m'lady", I sigh lovely as I rub my blurred vision clear, but once it has cleared, I'm slightly disappointed to see the amused grand chambermaid, Tabitha. "Close, but not quite", she snickers, "She's been awake for a few hours now". A few hours?? How did I not wake, what time is it!?!?!?  I open my mouth to ask her, but Tabitha steals the question from my lips and answers, "It is precisely 9'o'clock in the morning; the lady told me to go ahead and wake you now". It takes me a minute to properly register what she said, but once it has, I'm both shocked and upset. She just let me sleep nearly the whole morning away and for what?? Is she upset with me? I scoff pitifully rub my face again, and ask, "Whyy-uh"!? Tabitha looks at me confused and attempts to clarify and answer my question by snickering, "Well because there are 24 hours in the day and right now, it is the ninth hour of the day, hence why it is 9'o'clock in the morning". I roll my eyes and shoot her an evil glare. Still snickering, she sarcastically shrugs. It's too early for this.. I sneer back at her, mocking her insipid grin and growl, "Why pray tell, did the lady let me sleep the morning away"? The smile from Tabitha's face fades and she stands properly once more. Without answering, she starts to fix the covers and sheets around me, forcing me to leave the bed. Whatever, don't answer me. I stretch, long and heavily, flexing and tightening every muscle in my stiff body and slowly relaxing them as I push myself up. Tabitha glances up at me, her eyes widening as they travel upwards and back down my body. I catch her fixed staring and warn, "Gawk at me any longer and I'm going to have to start charging you". Almost too entranced to acknowledge my warning, "She shakes her head and looks back down at the bed as I start to get dressed. Speaking of getting dressed, where are my clothes? I search around the bed and in the dressers before Tabitha informs me that my clothes are in the chair. "Lady Beneviento left them for you", she clarifies as I stumble over to the chair. Neatly folded and placed carefully in the seat of the chair is a pair of black denim pants, a brown vest and a white dress shirt. There is a note sitting up against the collar of the shirt that reads: 'For Val, I made sure the vest and shirt would fit around your wings with buttons in the back. I hope this all suits you well. With love, Donna and Angie ♡.' I smile brightly reading Donna's note and happily sigh under my breath, "Donna, you're a miracle". I gently pick up the shirt, letting it fall open, and turn it over to see that it is in fact, open in the back and can be closed with four buttons, two on each side of the back. The vest has been modified the same way. Seems simple enough to figure out, after all I will be dressing this way for the rest of my life now, so I might as well get used to it. I start with the easiest of getting my pants on and fit out that they fit, but they're quite tight and hug my hips. Donna had taken all my measurements to make sure that the pants fit me perfectly, something that I purposefully avoided when I had made my own because I didn't really want my curves displayed. Whatever, Donna did this just for you, so be grateful and besides, Lady Dimitrescu will probably enjoy seeing me like this. I start to put my shirt on, reaching behind me and buttoning it around the base of my wings easily. As I dress, I turn back around to look at Tabitha, who I once again catch staring open-mouthed at me. Her head quickly snaps to the side as if playing off that she wasn't watching me, but I had already noticed her. "Got the hots for me or something!?!", I exclaim at her, feeling myself start to get angry. Tabitha's cheeks flash red as she becomes embarrassed and she quickly and angrily answers, "No". Facing her, I put my vest on and bark, "Then why do you keep staring at me"!?! She finishes make the bed aggressively and sighs deeply trying to compose herself. I finish getting dressed abd fold my wings behind me as she looks back up at me. A moment of silence passes as I stand there waiting for an answer. "I...sincerely apologize Valyrie", she says, choosing her words carefully, "it's just that I don't usually see PEOPLE with wings growing out of their backs". I instantly feel self-conscious and hear Cecily's words pound through my head. Freak...you're a freak...YOU'RE A FREAK! My blood boils hearing her voice, but I'm quick to check my temper and keep myself from lashing out at Tabitha. "Yeah, well...get used to it", I snarl turning and walking over to the door. The door clicks loudly and opens breezily as I catch Tabitha speedily walking towards me. I try to ignore her as she follows me. "Well, I understand now that this is the reason for what the lady had meant by accompanying you to the rooftops for a bit of flying", she charms, trying to ease me and get back on my good side. I stop, slightly bewildered by her statement, and turn back towards her. I was told I needed to use my wings more and more, but why do I need a 'buddy' to join me, especially the grand chambermaid? Curious, I step up to her and quietly whisper, "Is there something you're not telling me"? Wild confusion appears in her eyes and she steps back from me feeling intimidated. "I'm-no, why?", she stutters and stumbles over her words. I unfold and flex my wings slightly open, gesturing to them and pointing back at her, strongly implying that she possibly has wings too and it's a secret she's trying to hide. The confusion is replaced by sharp anger and she bites, "Absolutely not, I am accompanying you strictly because the lady requested I do so, probably for your saftey"! I roll my eyes at her and fold my wings behind me once more. Walking away, she continues to follow me, much to my annoyance. Strolling through the hallways and making my way to the main hall, I ponder how exactly I'm going to make it to the rooftops WITHOUT Tabitha following or watching me. Maybe I could just fly straight up from the courtyard? Risky, considering I have never flown before, but I just can't stand the idea of someone monitoring me like I'm a child. I head towards the dining room when Tabitha chirps, "Valyrie, the elevator is THIS way", pointing in the opposite direction. My face burns hot and it's getting harder to holster an outburst, but I remind myself that she is only following orders. "Right..right", I mutter while turning and storming off towards and all the way to the elevator with Tabitha still following closely behind. She presses the up arrow button as we step in. The metal door screeches closed as the elevator begins to hoist us up to the highest parts of the castle. The enourmous tension keeps us in silence the whole way up, only to be disturbed by the ding of our arrival as we stop and the elevator door screeching open. Being unfamiliar with this part of this castle, I wait until Tabitha exits and follow her. The cobblestone walkways are a bit narrow and make me feel uneasy. Just don't focus on the height, and definitely don't look down. "Hope you're not afraid of heights", Tabitha sneers as she notices my hesitation. I mock her sneer and step close to edge looking around at the other parts of the high and pointed rooftops whilst trying desperately not to look down. I just need to pratice flying around for a little bit, shouldn't be too hard. I flex and open my wings gently, feeling and learning the movement of my muscles and determining which to move to make my wings flap and get me airborne. It's actually much easier than I had imagined it to be since I do it on accident when I straighten my back. But is flapping my wings enough or do I need to do something else? I peer down over the edge and see a long drop to the ground below. After my last experience with falling from great heights, I'm much more eager to keep my feet firmly on the ground. Tabitha watches me as I take shaky breaths and pitifully attempt to convince myself that I will be fine. "Are you too scared?", Tabitha asks with a slight smirk on her face. Suddenly, something in my brain clicks and the rational side of me had no time to recognize it. I'll show her scared. I rush over to the opposite side of the platform and race back, getting a head start as I jump breezily onto the railing and dive down nosefirst towards the ground at high velocity. "VALYRIE!!", Tabitha screams as I plummet faster than sound. For an instant, it's as if the world stops moving and time is slowed down to a snail's pace. Pure adrenaline pumps and rushes through my veins, erasing my fear and making me feel unstoppable. I never look away and watch the ground get closer and closer as I fall. Not yet...not yet..My brain is screaming in my head, but I can barely hear a sound. It feels as if I'm heading straight first to death's door to greet him warmly. Time returns to normal and I continue to fall rapidly until I see the ground is quite literally 20 feet away. NOW!! I open my wings and the wind yanks my body up from its nosedive, forcing the air from my lungs as I fly upwards. It doesn't take much effort or power to return back to the height of the rooftops and fly breezily, pacing around showing off to Tabitha whose face is now bone-white and stricken with panic. She clutches her chest, gasping with relief as she slowly collapses to a sitting position. "WOAH HO HO, I DID IT!! HA HA, DID YOU SEE THAT, DO YOU SEE THIS?? I'M FLYING, WOOOO-HOOO!!", I laugh hysterically I fly around and through the elevator rooftop, still reeling in my adrenaline high. Tabitha gives me a deadly glare and shouts, "ARE YOU INSANE, YOU COULD'VE DIED"!!!!!! Still laughing, I spin around, still floating off the ground, and fly right up to her. "But I DIDN'T, I'M SO ALIVE RIGHT NOW, I'M UNSTOPPABLE"!!, I yell in energized glee. Tabitha slowly stands back up, grunting and still gasping on shock. I float and fly around some more, soaring around the rooftops, cheering and whooping with delight when something in the distance catches my eye. There's a large patch of little red dots partially hidden by shrubbery next to a very large windmill. The dots are quite tiny from this distance, meaning they are significantly bigger once I get closer and they appear to be growing in or at least next to the shrubbery. They're too big to be woodberries which means that they might be strawberries. Oh I hope they are, I love strawberries! Without thinking, I speedily soar over to the windmill, cautious of the wind's direction and making sure nothing interferes with my goal. Tabitha shouts at me desperately as I fly away, but I ignore her cries and pursue a sweet and tempting treat. It's difficult enough for me to eat at the castle anyway so this seems like a feast to me since I can still consume fruit without being sick. It'll just take me a minute to get these and I'll finally have something to eat besides crummy, old apples. Getting quite close to the windmill, I stop and slowly descend from the air until my boots are firmly against the earth. There's a small cave next to the windmill and sure enough all around the cave and in the brush are a whole bunch of big, fat strawberries, ready to be picked. I stroll over and suddenly realize I don't have anything to collect the berries in. I have to improvize something, what could I possibly- An idea pops into my head to use my clothes as a carrying pouch. There's a lot of strawberries and I plan on getting as many as I can. I strip off my vest and tie the bottom and top closed, using the armholes like handles as I start picking and stuffing the vest full. Unfortunately, it fills quicker than I realize and I decide to start stuffing berries down my shirt. Suddenly, I hear a chain clink and movement coming from inside the cave making me stop dead in my tracks. Staring into the dark mouth, I wait and listen for any more noises or movement. "Is someone there?", I ask stupidly as I put the last of the berries down my stuffed shirt and grab my vest. There is a moment of pure silence as I continue to stare into the cave, convinced that something is alive in there. The chain clinks again making me startle, followed by a low growl. I think I should leave right. now. "GRAAWWGGH"! An enourmous gray wolf-like creature leaps out of the cave at me, throwing me backwards in blind panic. "AHHH, FUCK, FUCK, FUCK!!!", I scream as I quickly grab my strawberry filled vest and leap up into the air, away from the monster. Snarling and foaming, it leaps up towards me only to be sharply jerked back by a old rusty chain around its neck. Looking down at the monster from the saftey of the air and still reeling with panic and stress, I can't help but wonder, What is that thing, because it sure as hell isn't a wolf..and who or WHAT got close enough to put a chain on it....is it a type of guard dog and is someone really just that protective of their strawberries? The monster roars at me once again and not thinking properly, I respond, "Don't be a greedy ass, I'm hungry too"! Enough of this, I got what I came here for, let's get back to the castle. I fly higher into the air and away from the cave and windmill, still glancing back at the beast until it's completely out of range. The wind on my wings soothes my rattled nerves as I soar and I feel lighter and fresher than I have felt before. I have overcome a great and deadly fear and am now reaping the sweet, sweet rewards...I wonder if more rewards are to come for facing more fears? The rooftops easily and clearly come into view as I prepare for another landing. Feeling my boots collide with the cobblestone, I fold my wings behind me and hold the strawberry filled vest close to me as I head to the elevator. I look around for Tabitha, but she is nowhere to be seen. Did she head back down without me? I shrug her disappearance off and press the button, listening to the elevator door screech open. Suddenly, something sharp and paniful grips and pinches my ear making me yelp in pain. "AH-HA AAOOWW!!", I howl, batting at my ear with one free hand as I'm jerked around like a doll. "I swear you're more trouble than you're worth!", I hear Tabitha's voice hiss at me as she drags me into the elevator.
