"Mr Jeter how are you..Please have a seat" Natalie says putting more pillows on the couch so that he can seat comfortably.
"Thank you girls" he says while putting down his briefcase and taking off his glasses. It's been long since I had seen him and he has actually aged. Well he has to age cause it's been years now. I wonder how my father would have looked while aging.
"Look at you'll, fully grown and have your own lives" he says and we both look down. The last time we had met was on my graduation and also Natalie's wedding. "I'm so proud of you'll" he says looking at both of us.
"Thank you uncle" Natalie says.
"You must be tired and exhausted by the trip how about some juice and cookies" I say standing up but Natalie beats me to it."No, it's fine I'll do it" she says standing up and storming to the kitchen. I sit quietly listening to Alex and Mr Jeter talk about they careers. Natalie comes back minutes later and serves him.
"Thank you so much. I am so tired honestly" he says taking a bite of the cookies and drinking some juice. Even after all these years he still loves his juice with cookies. We sit in silence until he is done eating.
"Brittney, may I please speak to you" he asks looking at me. I stop and look at him unsure. Why would he possibly want to talk to me privately. I hope it's good stuffs only.
"Oh yeah sure. You can go ahead" Natalie says sitting comfortably waiting for him to start talking.
"Privately" he finishes off and Natalie gives a confused face.
"You guys can use my study" Alex offers and Mr Jeter agrees. I stand up and lead him to the study. We take a seat and I wait patiently for him. As soon as he puts his briefcase down he takes out a bunch of papers which he lays on the desk.
"How's your daughter Andre and Nadia?" I ask to cease the awkward atmosphere. I am getting scared and impatient by the moment. All of this feels a bit scary that gives me a very uncomfortable feeling.
"Amanda is fine. She is doing modelling for three years now and as for Nadia she is also working her way up" he says with a proud look on his face.
"She no more does you know....." I ask looking down. It's uncomfortable to talk to him about it. His daughter Nadia was a druggie before. She suffered from depression after her ex boyfriend cheated on her with her best friend. Yeah, it's such an evil world we live in.
"Yes, she got help and is doing fine now. I praise the Lord for saving my daughter from that direction she was going in" he says finally finding whatever he was looking for.
"You know us father's aren't so important in our kids lives. We like there only for making sure you eat and have the best...It's mostly the mother who cares the most but also us father's care as much understand..." he says and touches his beard. I wonder where this conversation is going.
"Your father was a good man, a lovely father and husband. Everything he did was out of love.. that's all nothing else. He would take the stars for you if you wanted, anything you name it, he would sincerely do it" he says looking at me as I look down remembering my father.
He was a good man. The most kind and loving person I have ever met. Sometimes I just believe that God took him away because he was just too kind for this world. "One day your father and I were sitting on the porch by my house..." He says and I look up at him.
"He always told me what you and Natalie were up to. The times when you were in trouble and also when you made him proud..." He gives off a laugh while remembering and sitting back in the seat.
"He had said that he loved you so much but also Natalie, she was special also in her own ways. When I looked over at him, he had a sad look on his face so I asked him what was bothering him....I knew that time about his cancer...He told me not to worry but to protect you when you guys are gone" he says and I feel my eyes threaten to let loose the tears.
"So he gives me this envelope..." He gives me a Brown envelope with my name written in bold. I take it and look at it. I wonder what could be in there.
"He said to give it to you on your 22nd birthday." He says fixing his glasses.
"What's in here?" I ask curiously.
"No idea. For all those years I never opened it cause he said I shouldn't. Whatever that is in there is for you and you alone." He cleans up all the papers he messed on the table squashing it all in his briefcase."Brittney, your father loved you. Don't ever doubt it. Whatever that is in there be it good or bad it was all out of nothing but love and protection.." He says standing up.
"I got to go catch my flight. I really wish I would stay and chat with you'll but I have this heavy case to catch up on" he tells me and I stand up escorting him out. On the way out he meets with Natalie and Alex whom he gives his goodbyes.
"Oh, one last thing. Happy birthday my girl" he says before leaving in the taxi that came for him.
I stand there and wave goodbye to the car as it drives off. "What's in there?" Natalie says from behind me giving me a fright. I enter the house closing the door behind me and face a very curious Natalie. If curiosity was a person it would definitely be her.
"Mr Jeter said its for me alone. I promise to tell you right after I open it" I tell her and she sighs while crossing her arms not moving for me to go pass.
"Come on, just a tiny peak. Don't tell me you don't wanna know what's in there?" She uses her inquisitive skills on me. I take a look at the envelope and really want to tear it open but I'm not ready to face whatsoever that's in there.
What if it could be something very bad ? Or inheritance that will make me Natalie fight. I just have a really ugly gut for this one. "Nope, not now. I'm exhausted" I say and squeeze myself pass her making my way to my room.
In my room finally alone with some peace I lay down on the bed and look at the cupboard where I tossed the envelope. "I hope you not going to be the end of me" I say to myself.

"Good morning, Miss Bryson" Natalie comes in my room. I slowly open my sleepy eyes and face her.
"How are you doing today?" She asks coming to sit next to me on the bed. I rub my eyes and look at the clock. Thank goodness I never over slept today.
"I'm fine" I say sitting up.
"Can we like you...know...." She asks me. It has been today's now after my birthday and every morning she would budge in my room and ask me the same question over and over again."I have to get ready for work" I say getting out of bed and heading for the shower.
H/N: do you have a good or bad feeling about the envelope? 🤔
