"Hey!" He called from behind me as I slid between a group of men gathered in the centre of the room.

I spotted Calla not far from me and beelined straight for her, noticing a rather old man towering over her with a hand curled around her arm. She couldn't have looked less interested if she tried and her eyes constantly scanned the room before flitting back to him.

"Calla!" I called when I got close, gaining her attention.

"You bitch," the man I'd just kneed in what I'd learnt to be a very important and rather sensitive area hissed as his arm came around me, trapping me in a headlock. "You'll pay for that!"

I struggled in his hold, furious that he'd followed after me when only a few moments ago I fought to get away from him. "Take a hint!" I growled, only making him tighten his hold.

My eyes widened as my breathing started to falter and suddenly, with his free hand, he was aiming an knife at me. I fought harder as he moved it closer to my neck and watched realisation settle on my best friends face before she started towards me, the old man still attached to her.

"Hey!" She called, distracting the man who was trying to strangle me for just a moment. His grip loosened slightly as he regarded Calla with disgust - just enough for me to pull out of his hold and duck before Calla forced the knife towards where my neck had just been.

I darted out of the way when he grunted and blood dripped from his chest onto the top of my head. Everyone seemed frozen in shock for a moment - long enough for me to get away and launch for the guy who still hadn't let go of Calla.

He moved to pull his gun out of his jacket and I snatched it out of his hand, flipping it around so it was pointing at his head. "Stay back," I ordered, turning quickly to check on my friend. "Are you okay?"

She nodded, peeling her eyes off the body at her feet, bleeding out right there on the floor, and looked at me. "Kath," she whispered, nodding behind me.

I turned to see everyone in the room with their attention focused solely on us. A few of the closest men slowly moved to reach their guns and I repositioned to point my own weapon at them. "Touch your gun and I'll shoot," I threatened. It was unlikely that I could shoot all of them before someone got a weapon but they'd already lost two of their men because of me and by the looks on their faces, they didn't want to lose another.

I met Jak's gaze amongst the crowd and watched as he cringed, shaking his head at me. I couldn't help but frown at him before shifting my gaze to focus on a pair of dark green eyes that glared right through me. My stomach dropped when he suddenly started to step forward, the crowds of men carefully sliding out of his way until there was nothing between him and me except the gun in my hand.

"Everyone out," he said, his voice soft - too soft. I maintained my composure as slowly, everyone started to filter out of the room, their eyes never leaving me and my friend.

I dared to break eye contact with Kane for a moment to turn back to Calla. I raised an eyebrow at her as a way of asking if she was okay and couldn't help but smirk when her eyes went back to the body on the floor and she pulled a face. "Oops," she said, biting her lip before I turned back to Kane.

When the room had emptied and we were the only three left, he finally spoke. "That is the second one of my men that you've killed," he simply stated and while I was fairly certain he wasn't saying that as a compliment, I couldn't help but smirk.

"Perhaps you should teach your men to keep their hands to themselves," I told him with a shrug.

"Drop the gun," he ordered, ignoring my comment. "Now."

I shook my head. "How many of your men do I need to kill before you realise I'm not as stupid as you think I am?" I scoffed.

Before I could process what he was doing, he had pulled his own gun out. But rather than aim it at me, he pointed it towards my best friend. "Drop the gun or I'll kill her."

I narrowed my eyes, glancing briefly at Calla who shook her head. "Don't," she said, "he's bluffing."

The edge of his lips quirked and he raised an eyebrow. "I could kill you," I told him.

He laughed. "Now who's bluffing?" He took a step forward and in response, I tightened my grip on the gun.

His finger twitched, nearly pulling the trigger and I panicked, throwing the gun to the floor and grabbing my best friends arm. As quickly as possible, I pulled her behind me, shaking my head when Kane's grin grew. "Alright," I said, holding up my hands when he repositioned his weapon so it was aimed at me.

For a moment, he just stared at me, his finger still resting on the trigger. "Good," he finally said, lowering the gun and placing it back in his jacket before turning his back to me. "Let's go."

I allowed myself to release the breath I was holding before turning to Calla. "What's wrong with you?" She asked with an eye roll.

"I don't doubt for a second that he would've killed you," I told her, shaking my head and watching Kane as he moved away from us.

She shrugged. "Would've been worth it," she said with a grin, "if it meant you could've killed him."

I shook my head. "No way are you leaving me here alone."

"Let's go!" Kane yelled, turning back to us when he reached the door.

"Go where?" I questioned, not taking a single step.

"I gave you the opportunity to have some sort of say in you who reproduce with," he stated, "now I'm not."

"Excuse me?" Calla scoffed.

He opened the door, revealing every single man from the facility lingering in the hallway. "She's all yours," I heard him say to someone before the man that wouldn't let go of Calla before reentered the room.

I frowned as realisation settled in my stomach. Jak had warned me that not talking to any of the men wouldn't have any affect on what would happen but I hadn't listened.

"No," I said, shaking my head. There was no way I was letting him win. "I'd rather die."

I didn't dare break eye contact with Kane while the other man approached us, his greedy eyes set on Calla who inched closer to me.

"I will kill all the other girls," Kane answered, a daring glint in his eyes. "Your choice."

I turned to meet Calla's eye and realised we were trapped. I'd already slipped up and let one girl die for my mistakes, I would let it happen to another.

"Let's go," Kane repeated victoriously, gesturing towards the open door beside him.

I turned to Calla and threw my arms around her. "They can't break you," I whispered in her ear before turning and walking away, leaving her with someone three times her age with rotting teeth and wandering hands.

I pushed straight past Kane, entering the hallway to see the rest of the girls all paired up with different men.

"You can all go," Kane barked, sending them all dispersing in different directions. His eyes locked on mine and I raised a questioning eyebrow, well aware that whatever my fate was, it wouldn't be good. "You're coming with me."
