The man's eyes twinkled with glee, he was about to rid the world of the only person powerful enough to end his rain of terror, at least the person prophecy said would end him. And you're probably thinking you know exactly who this man is, you may be right but the most likely scenario is that you're wrong. This man is not who you think he is.
He placed his mortal enemy under the Imperius curse and easily destroyed Lily and James Potter, then he advanced towards the vile creature that laid in the cradle, Harry Potter.
He felt his curse on the man he hated lose some of it's power...he was trying to break free, he must hurry and destroy the baby boy. So he ordered the disgusting man to kill the baby.
Green light flashed in the house and the deed was done.
But as Dumbledore peered into the cradle, Harry was perfectly intact sleeping happily, that certainly was a surprise. 'Well' he thought, 'if he killing the boy was not possible, he could mold him into his perfect golden boy'.
He picked up baby Harry and deposited him at the Dursley household.
