The next day a press conference was being held. I watched from home, while eating my morning cereal.
"Settle down, guy." George Stacy said to the crowd of clamoring reporter's. "Settle down. Settle down. Listen. At approximately 9.pm, last night and incident took place on the Williamsburg Bridge. Much of what occurred is merely speculation at this point. However, several eyewitnesses to the crime, as well as our own preliminary findings, have positively placed one individual at the scene. Which is why, this morning, I am issuing an arrest warrant for the masked vigilante known as Spider-Woman."I pushed away from the table and walked away from my Aunt and the tv hearing that news. I made my way to school and during break, Peter and I sat in the bleacher's outside as the football team practiced. I gave him the vile containing the spider that had bitten me, and he inspected it as I told him the story of what happened, leading us to now.
"It's so amazing." Peter said about the spider.
"Yea, little sucker know's how to bite, though." I chuckled quietly.
"Is there anyone else that know's about this?" He asked curiously and I shook my head.
"Nope. Just you.""Wow, I feel honored." He chuckled.
"Hey, you don't, uh, believe any of that stuff from yesterday, or that the police say.. do you?" I asked him quietly and looked down to the ground. Peter lifted my chin and smiled.
"Of course not." I sighed in relief and nodded grateful for him. "Does it freak you out what you can do?"
I thought about my answer for a minute and smiled.
"I was a bit freaked out at first, but no, it doesn't really. Not any more.""So, tell me about the bridge last night. What did that thing look like?"
"Honestly, I though it was a dinosaur." I shrugged. "It was way to big to be a human and it was green and covered in scales. Kinda like a giant Lizard." I told him truthfully.
"You know, now that they've issued a warrant for your arrest. You're gonna have to lay low." Peter gave me a pointed look and I shook my head.
"I can't."
"You have to... I mean, why? Why do you think you can't."
"Because, Peter. After last night, all those people on that bridge. Whatever was attacking them would have... would have killed them." I looked into his eyes. Showing just how serious I was. "I need to go after it."
"Why you though?" Peter asked curiously.
"I just feel like it's my responsibility. Like somehow and someway this is my doing and my calling. I wouldn't have been given these gift's if it wasn't my responsibility. I started off going about this the wrong way, and now, I need to help."
"Okay." He nodded with a small smile. He made me feel understood. I smiled and looked down at the ground as we sat there silently for a couple of minutes.
"Hey, Cate?" Peter said softly and I looked up at him. "You know, we haven't really had a chance to talk about the fact that we've kissed twice now. I really like kissing you. You are an amazing kisser." He said slowly and I blushed and laughed.
"Well, thank you. You know, you are too. A great kisser, I mean. It was really good for me."
"I'd like to do it more often." Peter leaned in closer and gave me that dashing smile of his.
"Yeah?" I whispered leaning toward's him.
"Will you go out with me?" He whispered.
"Yes."Our lips met, and my sense went off as a football was hurtling our way. I easily caught it with one hand and threw it back without even having to look away from Peter. But the loud metal clang caught our attention.
"Yo!"
"Who did that?!"
The football player's called out looking up at the bent upright on the football goal post. Peter and I looked at each other and I gave him a weak shrug and smile.Peter and I had a free period and decided to go visit Dr. Connors. It had been a while. When we walked into his office it was empty.
"Hello?" Peter called out. I picked up the injection device from the table and I furrowed my eyebrows, studying it. Someone had just used it recently.
"It's not nice to snoop." Dr. Connors said sneaking into the room. Peter and I looked at him and smiled awkwardly. "I gave everyone the week off." We looked around not seeing anyone else in the labs like usual.
"Yeah." Peter said.
"Shouldn't you be in school?" He asked quietly.
"We have a free period. Uh, actually. I wanted to ask you a question. How would a predator track a reptile?" I asked him slowly."Oh, they don't." Dr. Connors answered. "Most reptiles are at the top of their respective food chain, kings of their domain."
"But they have to have vulnerabilities, right?"
"Why the sudden interest in the cold-blooded?" He turned around and asked. As I studied his face quickly, I shrugged.
"Just asking a question. We got school stuff. A biology profile, we have due." I lied. "So," I cleared my throat. "Because of the cold blood, would they react to sudden changes in temperature?"
"Well, you'd have to catch one first." He smirked. "Did you know there's a rumor of a new species in New York? Beautiful and quite large.""W-what do you know about it?" Peter asked curiously. "Have you seen it?"
We both stood up in front of him.
"No, it's not yet classified." He turned his head and looked directly into my eyes. I noticed the scaley patches on skin along his neck, and looked back at his face. "But it can be aggressive... if threatened." He whispered.
Connors turned around and grabbed his bag.
"Doc, are you alright?" I asked.
"Never been better, Cate. Never been better. If you two will excuse me, I'm afraid I'm gonna have to ask you to leave. I have a new project I'm working on and I need to be alone." He held the door open and both of us nodded. We walked out the door with him towards the exit. "Don't worry, Miss Barrett, Mr. Parker. I'll be back. Wonderful things are coming. Wonderful things!" He exclaimed and walked out of the building as I had slowed to a stop.
"Cate?" Peter whispered looking at my shocked face.Realization had fallen upon me. Dr. Connor's was the Lizard I had seen last night. We heard a low snarling sound and walked over towards the mice cages. Which only confirmed my thoughts. One of the mice had escaped it glass cage and turned into a much bigger rat, eating the other mouse. Scaley and a greenish color. I gasped and so did Peter.
"What?" Peter said in shock. He looked at me.
"Did you see his..."
"Neck, yeah. Do you think he..."
"Used the serum on himself. Definitely." I nodded.
"So, what do we do now?" Peter asked worriedly.
"I guess, the one thing we should do. We need to warn Captain Stacy." I said urgently and we left Oscorp in a rush to get to the NYPD."Mr. Mayor, if there was a giant dinosaur running around, the street's of Manhattan you would be the first to know. So, tell your son he can rest easy, all right?" Mr. Stacy said into the phone as Peter and I walked hurriedly into his office. "Yeah, you and me both, sir. Okay. Bye-bye." He hung up the phone and inhaled. "Miss Barrett, Mr.Parker, why are you two not in school?"
"We've got a free period." Peter said quickly. We got up from the seats and followed him through the precinct.
"Well, I do not, have a free track, so please. Make your point of being here quickly."
"There may not be a dinosaur, sir. But there is something, it's more dangerous and we know who it is." I explained quickly.
"You know who it is?" He stopped and looked at me.
"Dr. Curtis Connors..."
"Of Oscorp?" George said in disbelief.
"That's right, sir." Peter said.
"So, Dr. Curtis Connors, who''s also my daughter's mentor? Is that who you're talking about?"
"That's the one." Peter whispered.
"You know, recently, Dr. Connors gave Gwen a glowing college recommendation. It was beautiful. When I read it, I cried. But you would have me believe that he, in his spare time, is running around dressed up like a giant dinosaur?"
"Mr. Stacey, please. He's not dressing up, he's not a dinosaur. He's transformed himself into a giant lizard." I said seriously. As soon as the words left my mouth I sighed and ran my hand down my face.
"Let me ask you a question. Do I look like the mayor of Tokyo to you?" He asked me.
"I've always been a good upstanding kid. I still am. I swear to you that we are telling the absolute truth." I begged for him to understand.
"This man has worked for his whole life, on cross-species genetics. He lost one arm, and he's been trying to grow it back, but there was something imbalanced about the equation and he has turned into a lizard. He's using lizard DNA." Peter said quickly.
"And he's dangerous. He's planning something horrific, I know, I know." I reiterated the dangers.George sighed and looked at the both of, ending on me.
"Okay. All right, I get it. Here's what we are gonna do. You two are gonna go back to hanging out with the citizens of Tokyo, and I'm gonna go back to protecting the citizens of this fine, fair city of ours. Sergeant Butler, please escort Mr.Parker and Miss Barrett back to school."
The police officer got up from his desk and grabbed each of our arms, dragging us to the doorway.
"Captain George Stacey, I'm not messing around! Just bring him in! Call him in! You have to call him in. He's a danger to everybody! Just please listen to me!" I called out, as we were dragged from the precinct.
"Jimmy?" He walked over to one of his other officers. "Get me everything we have on Dr. Curtis Connors. Okay? Right away."
"Yeah."
