{Luke}

I sat in Tracy's living room in silence, my legs crossed underneath me on the sofa as I look at the blank screen of the TV that I hadn't bothered to turn on. I sigh, looking up at the clock and noticing it was half past four. I hadn't slept properly for almost a week. When Evie had gotten back I was so happy. I'd missed her, and couldn't wait to hear all about her time in London.

It has been over a month since she's been home and it was okay for a little while but then a few days ago, seven days ago, to be exact, she'd pulled me to the side while we were all out at a restaurant for dinner. I didn't quite understand why we were out together but when I'd gotten home that evening from my parents place, she was already at the house with Ashton.

They were sat quietly watching television when I had arrived, it wasn't odd seeing them like that anymore, just them not talking to each other, that was normal now. It did look like they had been there all day though. I noticed there was a slight undertone of bacon in the air, which meant they had eaten.

I was confused because Ashton never makes food, he just has sandwiches or cereal if it's just for him. I didn't say anything about it because Ashton had left for his mum's before the rest of us yesterday, so I assume he just got back earlier. Evie must've already been here, she does that sometimes. Both her and Sophia had a key.

Evie had seemed a little off with me at the house but I just ignored it, thinking it just might be from having to be around Ashton on her own, though once we were at the restaurant, it was safe to say that she really wasn't happy with whatever I'd done. When she pulled me to the side she looked so upset with me, and no matter how hard I tried to explain, she didn't understand it. She wasn't making any sense.

"Luke, you have to stop this. It isn't fair."

"Stop what?"

"You can't treat people like that."

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"I'm talking about the way you're treating Ashton."

"I'm not treating Ashton like anything."

"Luke," she sighed, "I get why you were angry with him, but it's over now. Me and Ashton are okay."

"Oh yeah, not talking and barely even looking at each other. You're the picture of happiness. I see it so perfectly now."

"Don't sass me, Hemmings."

"Why are you even defending him? He was a complete dick to you."

"I don't know, Luke, why am I defending him? Why do I defend you? Why do I volunteer to feed homeless people? Why do I spend my money on making sure they have a place to spend the night?"

"I don't... what?" I was so confused then.

"Because everyone deserves a chance, Luke. I thought you of all people would understand that, would understand me."

"But why? Why would you forgive him?"

"It's better to be the person who smiles rather than being the person who doesn't smile back."

"What?"

"Ergh, I'm not going to explain it to you now but you have to get over this, Luke."
