“I know you’re out there.”
“I know you know I’m out here.”
“Then why are you skulking about like it’s a minefield?”
“‘Cause I don’t know if I can trust you.”
“Funny, I was going to say the same thing.”
“So, we gonna talk like grown-ups?”
“Is that what we are?”
“Put it down before I make you.”
“You put yours down.”
“Watch your step.”
A series of grunts and yells fill my ears. Ah yes, sisterly love. I elected to wait in the hall as Natasha and Yelena... sorted out their issues. I’m not entirely sure what’s happening in the other room, but Natasha is yelling ‘stay down’ and it’s kind of hot. I hear them call a truce in Russian, but I don’t go in just yet. I take a seat in a chair in the hall; this conversation seems like one that should happen between just the two of them. I feel creepy lurking in the hallway, so I do my best to block out their conversation.
“I don’t wanna be here. I’m on the run. You could’ve gotten us killed,” Nat said.
“Well, what was I supposed to do? You’re the only superhero person that I know. That was the whole reason that I sent it to you. And what do you mean ‘us’? Who else was with you?” I heard Natasha sigh and I took that as my cue to enter. “Who the hell is this?” Yelena did not seem happy with my presence.
“I’m Eight. I’m here to help with whatever the hell is about to happen.”
“Ah, yes. You’re an Avenger, no? I’ve seen you on the news.” I nodded, scanning the windows for threats. “How do I know I can trust her?” Yelena asked, addressing Natasha instead of me.
“I trust her. That’s enough.” Their conversation steered to the Red Room and Dreykov. I didn’t say anything; it didn’t seem like my place. They were interrupted by the sound of footsteps, quickly followed by bullets tearing through the safehouse. I ducked behind a wall, making eye contact with Natasha and Yelena, who were behind the wall across from me. They make their way out of the apartment and I follow.
“Where are we trying to get?” Natasha asks.
“Motorbike! East side of the building.”
We make our way out of the building, but a Widow tackles me from the side. Natasha stops running, but I yell, “Go! I’ll meet you guys by the bike!” She hesitates, but starts running again when I throw the Widow off of me. We both stand, and I can tell she’s sizing me up. She lurches toward me with her fist raised, but I grab her arm and twist her around. She sweeps my legs from under me, knocking me to the ground. I do a kip-up and throw a hard jab at her stomach. She hunches over and I grab her hair, smacking her head off the wall and knocking her unconscious. I move to the ground floor and round the corner of the building, spotting the parked motorcycles. I don’t have to wait for more than ten seconds before Natasha and Yelena rush out of the building. As they argue over the keys, I steal one of the other bikes.
“Casey, what the hell are you doing?” Natasha asks.
“Well, three of us certainly ain’t riding on that thing,” I quip as I sit on the bike. I start it up and wait for them.
“Any day now,” Yelena says. They take off and I follow suit as an armored vehicle and a Widow chase after us. We get on the road and swerve through traffic until Natasha and Yelena are thrown off their bike. I quickly ditch mine and help Natasha up as Yelena hijacks a man’s car.
“You can’t just steal a guy’s car. What is it with you two and stealing things?”
“So you want me to chase him down and un-steal it?”
I snort out a laugh from the backseat and say, “I like her.”
“Thank you, Eight.” As Nat jerks the vehicle, trying to get out of the jam, she adds, “Any time now, Natasha.”
“Shut up.” I chuckle at their bickering as Natasha takes off down the road.
“Wait a minute, why are you driving? I should be driving, I’m an amazing getaway driver,” I say.
“Even I would do better than this,” Yelena deadpans. I hum in agreement before shots are fired at the vehicle. “Okay, you got a plan, or shall I just stay, duck, and cover?”
“Yeah, my plan was to drive us away.”
“That’s a shit plan.”
“That’s, like, not even a plan, Red. I mean, c’mon.”
Yelena yanks on the steering wheel and kicks the car door into the Widow, saying “You’re welcome,” as the bike crashes.
“Oh, shit. He’s back,” Yelena says, referring to the figure behind us.
“Put your seat belts on,” Natasha says.
“You’re such a mom,” Yelena whines, but we both comply, nonetheless. The person fires an arrow underneath the vehicle and it explodes, flipping the car and throwing it down the tunnel into the subway station. We stumble out of the BMW in okay condition, aside from Yelena’s bleeding arm. Natasha stops her from wrapping it, obviously having a plan in mind. We create a trail to the manhole, then stop the bleeding and climb into the vents.
“You okay?” Natasha directs the question at her sister.
“Yeah. Great plan. I love the part where I almost bled to death.” Yelena fills us in on who Taskmaster is and what his abilities are. Oh yeah, this’ll be real fun.
