All he ever wanted was
the glory.
Of marching with his friends
and winning.
That is what he thought would happen.
They placed him in the army
he was proud
his heart beat loud
in Anticipation.
The trenches were falling around his head
the gunshots in his ears
he quivered through the days and nights:
This was not adventure.
He, who only ever wanted glory,
and recognition,
and to win,
Was shot in the war and placed under a cross
that said:
“Unknown Soldier.”
And for the rest of eternity –
That was who he was.
