Giganotosaurus was a large theropod that was one of the largest ever terrestrial predators. It is believed to be at least as large as Tyrannosaurus rex. Its name means 'great southern lizard'. They once roamed what is now Argentina, and likely hunted juvenile sauropods. They were homeothermic, meaning that they could generate heat internally.

Discovery

The first find of Giganotosaurus was a thigh bone by an amateur fossil hunter in 1993 in Patagonia, Argentina. So far only one substantial skeleton of Giganotosaurus has been discovered.

Paleoecology

Giganotosaurus was likely to have been an apex predator in its environment of swampy lowlands with rivers and streams.
