It was always dark, the lab. It looked almost vacant from the outside, like nothing remained in its walls; however, the tall building was anything but. Within its walls, there are many rooms and many doors. Through these doors, machinery that is unthinkable to the average, human mind, is what is amidst these rooms. These machines aren't physically mechanical, they aren't what you'd imagine. Not what, rather who.
These machines are children. Real, human, children. But, they aren't ordinary. They are quite literally, extraordinary.
When these children were born, they were taken from their families; their mothers. Then, somehow, the mother's mind was altered; altered in a way that it would never return to what it once was. The mind was stripped of any memory of the child or the pregnancy. It's like the child never existed to these mothers.
When these children are described as extraordinary, it means they are very unusual or remarkable. These both being true. Each child has a number, not a name. Their caretakers are a variety of people, who never take their eyes off of them. The main caretaker, his name is Dr. Martin Brenner. He's a very remarkable man, but not so much sympathetic. Step one foot out of line, you're badly punished for your wrongs. No matter what you do to cover it up, he'll know. Whether it's by the mass amount of cameras scattered among the lab, or the many eyes and ears he has lurking in the hallways. No matter what, he will know.
Dr. Brenner doesn't allow any of the caretakers to get close to these children, he says they would distract them. In this case, he was right.
