An opal ring that used to glow

Somewhere in the dark cold forest
The one small clearing was her home
Every piece of light she built on her own
Blue and purple flowers she planted alone

She's used to it now, isn't she?
The fearsome creatures flying around,
so mystique...
Why would they want the dark to come again? They're so meek
And the powerful shadows trying to come in
She knows she can't hold them forever,
she's weak

Walking in the clouds, under the midnight moon
She practiced her power during the heavenly tune

Beneath the stars, out of sight
He told her the secrets of the silver knight
All the beautiful words he would recite
But she was never able to increase the light

Thousands of years have passed
She woke up to see that nothing's left
The flowers turned gray and the trees were burned
She wouldn't cry this time, she thought she had learned

It was them, it was them
The ethereal wraiths overflying the lagoon
Furious heavy steps as she croon:
"It was them, it was them"

There was a boy on the other side
Holding a small bag of opals
Shiny tears would fall from his eyes
As he sees his smart and talented girl fall

"It was them, it was them"
For the thousandth time,
he would say it, he would lie
But the broken girl needed to realize

Was it them?

The sky was bright and clean
No ghosts or monsters to be seen
The darkness was in her brain
Black fluid emerging in her veins

A lonely girl sitting in the meadow
With an opal ring that used to glow
The boy wasn't there
No one was

Was it them?
Was it them or was it her?
