oceans and stars

In the resort, Daonuea was back where he started once again. Peering into the empty abyss of the sky, he couldn't help but feel empty. For once, the stars seemed odd in his eyes. Empty, almost. Like he was missing something. Maybe it was the lack of warmth, maybe it was the sand that settled beneath his feet, unlike the grass he'd laid on back in Germany.

Maybe it was because he was missing somebody.

Even if they were barely metres apart, barely inches apart. Their hearts were so close, yet so achingly far. What they had between them...he couldn't describe it, couldn't quite put it into the words he was looking for. What he wanted
It was a yearning that shook his soul, reverberating through his bones. A desire that seeped through every layer of him like wicked ink, consuming him from within.

Does he know? Nuea wondered, letting the wind kiss his face, in place of another. Subconsciously, his mind slipped back to the boy of his heart. Brown hair, keen eyes. Need He say more? He could feel brown locks of hair slipping through his fingers again, even if it was just for a moment. The weight of his gaze when he thought no one was looking. Or even when they were, but Khabkleun didn't care. Or did he? It was an odd dance between them, in a way. An odd rhapsody playing between them. A dance they barely knew the steps to, but they'd memorised every tune, every melody. They fell into discordant steps as it played, stepping close before pulling away.  Their song was one that had been written not long ago, but both had heard it enough times, it felt like eons ago from when it was first created, every note embedding itself into their bones, into their hearts.

As if on cue, Daonuea felt a familiar weight shifting beside him. Without bothering to look up, he recognized the presence beside him. His heart quickened at that, breath stuttering for a moment. Wordlessly, Khabkleun sat next to him. If only he knows what he does to me...

Nuea half-braced himself for the plethora of questions and nagging he thought the other would give him from leaving early. Instead, the other simply say beside him, gazing up at the stars as he did. His eyes seemed to follow one star in particularly, the brightest one in the sky. Kleun smiled slightly before he pointed up at it. "That's the North Star, isn't it?"

Daonuea couldn't explain the way his heart flipped hearing that, his heartbeat thrumming through his ears. His throat went dry. "Yes, it is. Why?"

Khabkleun leaned back slightly, propping himself up on his arms before turning to glance at Daonuea. His eyes lit up looking at him, filled with oceans of inexplicable feeling. Nuea could feel himself drowning in the weight of them, feel the tides in his eyes lapping against his skin in painful synchrony. "Because there's a saying someone I love told me once before."

"No matter which direction the earth rotates, the North Star will always shine in the same spot."

Daonuea felt blood gush up to his ears, dusky pink splattered over his cheeks like paint on a canvas.

"And I can't tell if my star still shines in the same spot." I wonder if he still shines for me.

Finally, Daonuea turned to face Khabkleun, his eyes drawn to his almost immediately.

"Dao, have you fallen in love before?"

At this, Daonuea couldn't help but let out a surprised squeak, an ember of hope combusting into flames in his heart, no matter how desperately he tried to squash them. He pulled at the collar around his neck, which seemed to have tightened in the span of the last few minutes. Have I...How am I supposed to answer this question when all I know is that I've fallen in love with you?

Daonuea sighed softly, before recomposing himself. In the end, he decided to just tell him the truth. What could go wrong?

"Yes," he whispered, "once."
Need I say who?

"Do you still love them?"

At this, Daonuea fell silent, unable to answer. I do, but you...you're so achingly close, I don't want to dash things with you...

Mistaking his apprehension for discomfort, Kleun stepped back slightly. "You don't have to answer if you don't want to...I just hope you give love a chance."

Do I still have a chance with you?

"What if I fell in love with the wrong person? What happens then?"

Nuea's eyes were a dead weight against the brevity of the sky. They were filled with as many stars as there were black holes, countless vacuums that tone couldn't help but fall into, drowning in.

"What do you want to happen?" He answered, brown eyes gazing at him intently, an endless ocean of affection that the other failed to register, even as their gazes locked, making both their hearts skip a beat.

"I want to...be happy, I guess. I'd rather find my number one, than spend the time flitting through people..but if I can't find him..." he smiled sadly, gazing back up at the stars in the sky.

"I don't want to spend the rest of my life alone," he whispered harshly.

"I can't figure if it'd be better to live with someone I love, even if they're not my soulmate, or wait a lifetime for someone that I don't even know exists."

Kleun gazed at him, an ocean of unreadable emotion in his eyes. His heart burned, so close to him. But it aches, knowing how far he was. Can't you see me? He wanted to ask. Can't you see my feelings for you? I love you. Yes, I love you. I can't help but feel inexplicably drawn to you, something that thrums in my veins like tides that will not rest, will not quaver. To me, you're the moon that attracts the ocean, pulling me to you in waves. Shining as bright as the star you're named for. I love you.

But the words died in his throat, leaving nothing but a whispery trail on his lips. Instead, he tore his gaze from the boy, from the star who held his heart so closely, guarding it even from afar. The urge to pull him close set a fire within him, and he wanted more than to drag him close and kiss him. But he couldn't do that, could he?
Not to him. Not now.

I don't even know if he likes me back.

"You'll find him, I'm sure of it."

I wish it was me.

"Mm, thank you, Kleun. I really needed it." Nuea continued staring up at the sky, his feet lapping idly at the waves that swept past their feet. Smiling, he leaned back onto the other's chest. Their hearts brushed against each other for a moment, light pink sprinkled over their cheeks, though it was too dim for either of them to make out in the dark.

I hope it's you.

I love you.
