Drowning was her greatest fear. Literally and figuratively. Drowning beneath saltwater ocean waves did not differ so significantly from drowning beneath waves of salty tears and memories.

Each tear that fell added a drop of saltwater to the freshwater lake in her mind. 

Eventually she would run out of tears and space in her head, once the lake became an ocean.

But the girl hardly even noticed as the lake grew deeper and darker over the years.
