My mother had just been arrested for trying to rebel against Jon

Michael and I was left alone. My father had died of cancer 6

years ago and until now my mom was all I had. My brother left a
year ago to join the gaurd. So I was left with my aunt. I was only

15, so I was not allowed to join the guard. (You join the guard at

16 and leave the guard at 30 because Jon Michael doesn't want

little or old people in charge. So I just go to school. ) My aunt

went through my moms old clothes to give me because I had out

grown all mine. She said "A young lady needs age appropriate

clothing." After that my aunt drove me to school,my teacher

announced " Today the guard has to go through every house and

make sure that we are not harbouring fugitives, weapons, or

making plans to rebel."(Here we are not allowed to have

piercings any where except our ears, but we are allowed to have

tattoos. I only have one and it's a tear on fire. It sounds stupid,

but it has a point. The tear means fear and the fire means to be

brave. So the tatoo means to be brave and overcome or burn your
fears. The guard has to pat down everyone and make they don't

have any weapons.) About an hour after I get home my brother

and another guard walk into our house and to pat us down.

While my brother pats me down he hands me a note very

carefully trying not to let the other guard see. I wait until they

are gone to open it.

It says Dear Maddie I am no longer allowed to speak to you or aunt Cass. Jon Michael has just made a new law saying that once you become part of the guard you or no longer allowed to speak with your family until you are fired at 30 or relieved because of injury. I know you may not want to join the guard but I need you to trust me. We have big plans.

I can't believe Jon Michael would do something like this, oh wait

yes I can because he is a tyrant. Well in a week I turn 16, am I

really ready for this?
