Hayato's head throbbed as he laid in his bed, staring up at the lavender ceiling through his glasses.

It was still in the late afternoon. Just a few minutes after he'd finished speaking with his parents.

Hayato let out a long sigh.

[Poor Hayato, torn in two. I have to admit though, you did surprise me there at the last minute.]

Hayato was too tired to snap back at the voice. Instead, he let out a long sigh.

     It seemed so complicated...

Hayato join forces with his parents, who were working for the same people that tried to have Iris burned at the stake back at the village. And tried to stab her death back at the tavern.

     But not only that.

He had to give Iris over to them, or face the difficult truth that his father wouldn't hesitate in anyone here at the citadel.

And when Iris was handed over...

... She would meet her end as well...

Or, at least that's how the plan was going to go. Until Hayato did a little bargaining.

"I'll join your side permanently," Hayato said while raising his chin high at his skeptical father. "And become an informant while I work here besides Sarah and the teachers, under one condition."

"And that would be?" Hayato's mother was more then eager to listen while her husband raised a brow.

"We hand over Iris to the underground, but she doesn't die..."

Hayato wasn't surprised by the anger that turned his father's battered face red. But he didn't pause long enough for him to lash back.

"I know you and Mother believe what those fanatics--- I mean---- You think Iris is nothing more then a monster. Something that needs to be destroyed to maintain the balance. But..."

Hayato would never forget the ache his heart felt at that moment. "You" believed Iris was a monster.

What he left out of that statement was the fact that a part of him was just as scared of Iris's power as much as his parents were. And he hated it.

"You think Iris is why the balance is broken but..." Hayato sucked in a breath.

It was a grand idea. A dangerous idea.

"The balance is already broken. Only a blind person would see otherwise. The world... It's a mess... But... Iris... She could be the one to put it back together instead..."

His father's mouth flew open but Hayato sent him a withering scowl that kept him quiet.

"I don't mean keeping the balance like the way Katayma-sama, or the other guilds, or the churches want. In your eyes, they're the ones leading the  way to destroy the world.  I mean, keeping the balance the way those hypocrit--- I mean---- you believe is right..."

Hayato hated the way his father's eyes lit up. He understood the plan then.

The plan that would force Hayato to do things he never thought would be possible.

"So that's why you want to work as an informant," his mother whispered in disbelief as she stared at her son's profile. "You really are going to help us take down the guilds from the inside?"

     Hayato swallowed hard.

     "Precisely."

Now that the plan was changed, Hayato's parents promised to try to calm down the same concerned parents they riled up back at Sarah's office. His mother let out a sigh of relief.
