after dinner, gemma went to her room with belly in tow. the girls kept gossiping for a while and belly asked million questions about the debutant ball that gemma had participated at the end of her retreat last summer.

"what do you think happened?" belly suddenly asks and the blonde girl looks at her with a confused face. "with conrad."

"what do you mean?" she knew exactly what belly was trying to say, she felt it too.

"well... he's closed off, barely talks and now he quit football?" the younger girl lays on the bed and stares at the celling. "something's off."

"hadn't he been like that last year?"

"mhmm no, he was grumpy," belly raises her eyebrows at her friend in a knowing way before continuing "but he was normal."

"I'll try to talk to him, maybe he just needs someone to talk to." the older girl comments while picking a swimsuit for their traditional night swim together.

"I'm sure he doesn't want just to talk to you gem, he was looking at you during dinner as if he could choose to devour you instead of susannah's food, he would."

"oh shut up isabel" gemma felt her whole face get warm and threw a shirt at the young girl "you're disgusting, now go outside so I can change." the blonde girl grabbed belly's arms getting her off the bed and pushed her out of the room "wait for me downstairs."

gemma closed the door before belly could say anything else.

the girl did miss the way she and conrad were the last time she was in that same house. he was almost glued to her; they would do anything together. she often celebrated her birthday with belly, since her birthday was at the end of the summer. ever since susannah found that out, she made the girls celebrate together.

two summers ago, conrad planned a whole day for her, they went hiking, cycling, he even attempted to teach her how to surf. and as her gift he gave her a camera he saw her gawking at the summer prior to that. to gemma, that was one of the best days of her life.

but now? she barely recognizes the boy she used to love.

downstairs belly was chatting with her mom when gemma came down, when the young girl saw her the almost cried.

"oh thank god you're here, let's go." grabbing her friend's arm she said "bye mom, love you."

gemma had a funny expression on her face while belly dragged her to the pool, she looked back at laurel who had an eyebrow raised watching the scene, the blonde girl just shrugged.

suddenly the williams girl bumped into her friend and looked at her confused but kept walking.

"you drag me here to just stop like a damn statue," looking at the pool finally she saw him sitting on the edge of it, his feet in the water. "I almost fell" she hissed.
