"Pregnant?" Ben repeated staring at her.
"Yep. P.R.E.G.O. I found out two weeks ago." Miranda replied playing with her hands.
"How do you feel?" He questioned not wanting to be overly excited if she wasn't ecstatic.
"Physically or about the pregnancy in general?"
"Both."
"Physically, I have been having morning sickness and I am tired a lot. I'm excited about the pregnancy. At first I wasn't, granted everything that happened, but now I'm kind of happy about it. We talked about this and we both wanted more children and with each other.” She explained looking into his eyes.
"I'm excited too. Hopefully it's the girl you wanted." He smiled.
"I know you want a boy Benjamin." Miranda laughed pursing her lips.
"I do only because I have a girl, but you have a boy so."
"They will be loved either way." She shrugged.
"Wouldn't it be great if it was two in there?" He grinned touching her stomach.
"No it would not be great and don't jinx it either because I'm the one that has to share my body with them. What would we look like at this age with two newborns?"
"Uh we would look like two loving parents, who happened to have an active sex life."
"I'm sure people are going to be able to tell that now."
Ben chuckled and nudged her face. "I love you." He told her seriously.
"I love you too and I'm sorry again." Miranda said wearily caressing his face.
"Stop apologizing. We are leaving that in the past."
"Alright let's put it behind us." She waved behind her.
"Let's make a promise to each other." He said seriously grabbing her hands.
"What kind of promise?" Miranda asked curiously sitting up some.
"A promise that we're a team no matter what." He stated first.
"No matter what." She agreed
"Whatever you lack, I got you. We will balance each other out. I'll be your backbone. I'll keep you motivated and at the top, always. You don't ever have to doubt my loyalty. You got me. I got us." Ben listed out quickly causing her to smile and nod at him.
"I promise to be with you in all the ups and downs on this crazy rollercoaster of our love." She declared before kissing his lips softly. "Pinky promise." She whispered next.
"Nope ring finger promise." Ben said holding his out.
Miranda looked down at his finger and giggled. He was so sweet and sentimental. She locked her ring finger with his and smiled.
"I promise." He grinned
"I promise." Miranda beamed.
Ben grabbed both sides of her face and brought her lips to his. He pressed his lips firmly against hers and she opened her mouth, letting him explore with his tongue. As they kiss, Ben grabbed her upper thigh and pulled her back onto his lap.
Miranda wrapped her arms around his neck kissing him back just as eagerly. When he let go and nipped at her lips she looked up at him.
She could see his thinking face was on so she waiting for him to say what ever it was that he wanted to say.
"The other day. Why were you out with him?" He asked scrunching his face up and pushing her back a little.
Miranda rolled her eyes at his question.
"We just said we were leaving that in the past. Why can't that be in the past?"
"You told me you weren't communicating with him but then we had a falling out and next thing you know he's back. What the hell was that? Is he the back up plan, I'm trying to understand."
"It’s nothing for you to understand. Leave it in the past."
"I'm just making sure that he is in the past."
"He just needs to come get his clothes that he left at the house and he will be in the past." She responded but was joking.
She watched as his face twisted and his jaw clenched. He was furious. Ben pushed her back off him completely and stared at her in disbelief.
"You had sex with him and you knew you were pregnant with my baby?"
"Benjamin."
"No just answer the question."
"You already know the answer to this dumb question."
"I don't think I do." He said forcefully.
"Ok well you let me know when you figure it out." She stressed standing up. Miranda walked into the kitchen and looked into his refrigerator. She was hungry and didn't know what she wanted.
"You want chicken fajitas?" She asked looking at all the ingredients.
Ben eyed her heavily. She was a piece of work.
"Did you sleep with him or not?" Ben asked angrily.
"Did you have sex with your wife?"
"Ex wife."
"Wife at the time." Miranda sneered rinsing off the bell peppers and onions. She reached down under the cabinet and grabbed his cutting board, before she began slicing.
Ben walked into the kitchen and slammed his hand down on the counter frustrated.
Miranda stopped chopping the vegetables and looked up at him like he was crazy.
"You really want to slam your hand down at me while I got this knife, while I'm pregnant and emotional. Is that what you want to do?" She asked pointing the knife at him. Ben shook his head and sighed as she held the knife up.
"You know I did not have sex with that man, it was a joke. The fact that you think I did is pissing me off. I'm feeling murderous."
"I don't like that joke."
"Clearly. Now can we really leave stuff in the past like we said 10 minutes ago."
"You're asking me. As soon as you got upset you asked me what was I doing with my "wife"."
"Ex wife." She remarked causing him to chuckle.
"You are crazy."
"That may or may not be true." She laughed. "Help me cook this food."
"On it."
"What does your schedule look like this week, I want to schedule the ultrasound appointment and check up."
"Wednesday I get off shift. So I'll be home in the morning and the rest of the day."
"Okay. Give me one more day just incase."
"Uh the following Monday."
"Alright I will let you know the date and time for one of those days."
The following Monday Ben sat in the blue chair waiting on Miranda to show up to their appointment. He didn't want them to reschedule so he walked up to the desk and signed her in. The nurse handed him paperwork with a clip board and pen.
"Miranda where are you?" Ben whispered into the phone.
"I'm coming up now. I got held up in the pit."
"I signed you in."
"Thank you baby."
Miranda walked down to the OB floor and round the corner to the waiting area for appointments. She smiled seeing Ben filling out paperwork. He must have told the nurse he was the father when he signed her in.
Seeing Miranda he stood up on his feet and kissed her lips before sitting down beside her.
"You're glowing Miranda Bailey." Ben said nuzzling her neck and rubbing his nose back and forth on her cheek.
"Am I now." She smiled giddily.
"You're the most beautiful woman on the planet and this makes you shine brighter."
"Well I think you should take credit for this glow. Starting with last night." She teased.
"Miranda." He groaned just thinking about it.
The two had to wait ten minutes before they were called back into Doctor Ryan's office by one of the nurses. Miranda watched, amused, as Ben stared and played with one of the plastic fetuses. "Benjamin, stop it." She couldn't help but laugh, though. "You're a physician."
Ben flashed her a nervous smile, but listened. He was fidgety and didn't know what to do. He had only gone to a few of Lisa's appointments during her pregnancy with Mia. Luckily, Doctor Connie Ryan entered the room only a few seconds later.
"Hello, Dr. Bailey. And I assume you're the father? It's nice to meet you."
"Dr. Benjamin Warren Nice to meet you too, Doctor Ryan." He shook her hand.
"Hey, Dr. Ryan." Miranda was suddenly nervous, and she didn't know why. What if something had gone wrong? What if there was no heartbeat? She had been worried about a miscarriage. She was an older woman having a baby.
After she went over medical history and did the hGC test again, the two waited for the results. The hGC test had confirmed the pregnancy a month earlier, but Dr. Ryan wanted to do it again. This time was just to see how much there was, while the previous one had been to determine pregnancy.
"While we're waiting for the results, let's do an ultrasound. Are you ready to see your baby, Chief and Dr. Warren?"
The two nervous parents nodded. Miranda grimaced when she pulled out the wand to do a transvaginal ultrasound. She knew it was better to hear the baby's heartbeat at this stage. After getting that squared away, the gel was squirted onto Miranda's abdomen and the image popped up on the screen. The sound of the heartbeat soon filled the air.
"That's our baby Miranda." Ben stared in awe at the screen.
However, Miranda wasn't listening and Doctor Ryan had a thoughtful look on her face. "Is that…" she went to ask shocked, but got cut off.
"I'm hearing two heartbeats. I also see two fetuses on the screen. Congratulations, you two. You're having twins." Doctor Ryan pointed out both fetuses to Ben and Miranda
Ben stared in shock. He was just joking when he said wouldn't it be cool if it was two in there.
Miranda had noticed that there were two immediately, but she still couldn't grasp the fact. She and Ben were having twins? Two babies!
"Twins? Benjamin and I are having two babies? As in more than one?"
"As in more than one. This changes things slightly. And it looks like they don't share a placenta, so they'll be fraternal. I'll print out copies of the ultrasound for you."
"So what does this mean? More appointments with you?" Miranda was still trying to deal with the shock she and Ben had just received.
"Yes, Miranda. I'll be monitoring your pregnancy more closely than I would if you were only carrying one baby. I'll give you some pamphlets on multiple pregnancy." She handed them over a few minutes later, and Miranda stopped to make an appointment with the receptionist on the way out.
"You jinxed us." Miranda huffed swatting his shoulder.
"I was just joking Miranda. I didn't know it was going to happen."
"I know that, but two babies Benjamin. This explains the constant hunger and weight gain. I'm never satisfied."
"Do you want to get something to eat now?"
"Well of course, I'm staving. Breakfast is long gone.... We have so much to prepare for, we have to get two of everything."
Ben picked a restaurant nearby and was holding her hand as he opened the door for her.
"Hello, table for two?" the young waitress by the door said.
"Yes, how long is the wait?" Ben asked.
"There isn't one right now. You can follow me please." The waitress gestured them to follow her to a table in a corner. Ben held out the chair for her and she sat with a little smile playing around her lips.
When he sat down opposite of her he almost immediately took her hand again. She brushed her thumb across his knuckles and saw him relax.
The young waitress came back and handed them their menus and retreated again quickly after they ordered drinks, as if she didn’t want to intrude.
"You been here before?" she asked him.
"Yeah, I used to come here with my sister. She always ordered the spare ribs," he replied.
"Spare ribs? You really took me somewhere fancy then?" Miranda teased.
"I know you have a craving for barbecue sauce right now." Ben shrugged.
"Ribs do sound good." She responded licking her lips.
Miranda ordered ribs, mash potatoes and fresh green beans and Ben ordered sausage stuffed shells with spinach and cheese, that came with a salad, and garlic bread.
"Alright so what names are you thinking?" Ben questioned.
"I don't know. We have to come up with two girl names and two boy names and then pick one of each that we like just incase its a girl and a boy."
"I hope it's a girl and a boy because if it two girls, I feel sorry for Tuck and myself."
"I hope it's a girl and a boy too, then it will be an even amount."
"It crazy how we went from one kid each to 4 all together."
"Yeah I know. Your damn super sperm. My poor egg didn't have a chance."
Ben laughed covering his mouth. She was insane.
After their food came they ate and threw names back and forth.
"Danielle and Devyn." Ben stated.
"No." Miranda shook her head. " I like Danielle. That was my sisters name, but I don’t know about Devyn.
"I think its cute."
"Brian and Bria or Brianna." Miranda listed.
"I like those, write those two down."
"Eli and Ethan."
"Absolutely not." Ben said seriously rolling his eyes.
"Eli and Elijah." Miranda picked messing with him.
"You can stop saying Eli because I’m not naming my son that."
"Okay." She laughed. "But Elijah is cute. Baby I really like Elijah and Elena."
"No."
"What's wrong with that?" She pouted.
"Because the nicknames. El is the nickname for Elena that’s cute, but Elijah, Eli. I don't know what you're not understanding."
"Well let me explain to you what you're not understanding two babies are going to be coming out of my vagina."
"I know that."
"Alright then."
"Can we at least pick something else and come back to those if need be?"
"Yes." She smiled and looked up as the waitress came and refilled her tea.
Miranda looked up at the woman two table behind them as she glance up looking at Ben. She noticed it the first time, but now she was at the third and starting to get on her nerves.
"Do you know her or something?" Miranda asked nodding behind his head.
Ben looked around to see who Miranda was talking about. He turned behind him and nodded at the woman causing Miranda to click her teeth.
"We went out years ago, maybe 2007." He answered truthfully.
"I'm tired of meeting your ex's." Miranda growled.
"You've only met one." He laughed.
"Well I’m tired of seeing them and if she looks over here at you one more time I’m going to cause a scene."
"Baby relax... do you want to switch chairs with me?"
"No because then I can't see if she looks at you."
"Miranda men look at you all day long. You don't see me saying anything."
"Oh pssh." She waved.
After finishing their food, Miranda ordered more to go. They grabbed the bags of food and walked to the car.
"Here hold this baby." Miranda instructed as he opened the car door. She handed him her phone and purse.
He closed the door and felt her phone vibrating in his hand. Ben looked down at the name Lisa and he frowned.
When it went to voicemail, she texted her.
"Wednesday at 9 is fine. Mia was asking for you."
"Why are you talking to her?" Ben asked getting in the car and handing her the phone and her purse.
"Who?" Miranda questioned but already figured who it was.
"Lisa that's who."
"I would think most men would want the mother of their child and now girlfriend to get a long." She answered.
"Miranda I know what you are doing and its not going to work. Why does she have your number? When did she get your number and why are you talking to her?"
"It's not my story to tell and if you would respond back to her, you would know. You need to sit down and talk to your ex wife.
"No. I'm not doing that. She tried to ruin our lives."
"I know and I remember, but it’s important."
"Man Just tell me."
"Uh Miranda is fine. Why are you getting so worked up?"
"Because you're lying to me."
"I'm not lying to you. I can't disclose patient medical information." Miranda said and then she put her hand over her mouth.
"Wait what? Is she sick? She's your patient? He asked back to back.
"Baby slow down. She is my patient, but I can't tell you anything. Just promise me that you will talk to her."
"I will talk to her." He sighed.
"Thank you."
