Chapter 24: Lap pillow

During dinner, Christophe is thankfully not bothered by Emilia about his previous behavior, so as to not raise any suspicions from Subaru. Once dinner is finished, Christophe volunteers to help Rem with the dishes, seeing the plates being more grimy than usual.

Jumping on this occasion, Ram instantly agrees, as this means less work for her. Plus, this allows her to keep an eye on Subaru and prevent him from breaking anything as much as possible.

Christophe: "Let me do the scrubbing and rinsing. You'll just have to dry and put the dishes away."

Rem: "Is Chris-kun sure? Rem can help him scrub."

Christophe: "Don't worry about it. With all that soap, it will dry your hands anyway. I can't let that happen."

Rem: "Why is that?"

Christophe: "It's better when girls have soft hands to hold."

Quiet for a moment while Christophe scrubs a very dirty dish, Rem inspects her hands, trying to feel if she has dry or soft hands.

Finally getting the better of the dirty dish, Christophe rinses it and puts it to the side. Taking it, Rem dries it and places it in their respectful place. Finally, she asks a question.

Rem: "Does Rem have dry hands?"

Focusing on scrubbing, Christophe replies without hesitation.

Christophe: "No, but with that amount of filth and the amount of soap we use, you might."

Rem: "Then they must be soft?"

Not paying attention to his words, Christophe replies while frantically scrubbing.

Christophe: "Yup. Very soft."

With a sudden blush forming on her face, Rem begins to think as she begins to rub her thumbs on the back of each opposite hand.

Rem: "If it was Nee-sama, it would have been natural for Chris-kun to give such compliments, but since it is Rem... Does Rem really deserve such praise?"

Speaking through her increasing blush, Rem states her conclusion.

Rem: "T-Then... Chris-kun must have e-enjoyed holding Rem's hand."

With his penny finally falling, Christophe's head snaps around, looking at Rem, her back at him. All he can see is Rem putting a dish away. But on the other side, she has an immense blush on her face.

Christophe: "I... I think I have been slightly too honest... I need to be careful."

After the dishes were cleaned and put away, the two head to Christophe's room for a tutoring lesson. In the hallway where Christophe's room is, a door is seen open, letting the evening light shine on a very small part of the hallway.

Approaching the opened door, both Rem and Christophe know it's strange to have a random guest room door to stay open.

Whispering, Christophe voices his confusion to Rem.

Christophe: "Wasn't this a room that Subaru was meant to clean?"

Nodding, Rem replies.

Rem: "Yes. Rem will go ahead and tell Subaru-kun that he is already done for the day. It is strange that he is still working this late."

Christophe: "Alright. But don't be too rash on him, please."

Nodding, Rem approaches the door, followed by Christophe. Arriving at the opening, Rem quietly calls out.

Rem: "Subaru-kun?"

Stopping for a moment, Rem speaks up.

Rem: "Is Subaru-kun just asleep?"
