'You Ok? You've been quiet for a long while.'
Alex and I were in my car driving home.
'I wasn't quiet because I wanted to, it's just a lot to think. You know, I have tried to picture who you were, and imagined you and me together so many times.' We took a turn into the main road of my neighborhood. I looked at him for a moment. 'I don't know, I just had this dream of you teaching me how to ride a bike, then how to ride a car, or other things, but... Now that's not possible. I'm all grown up.'
Silence. Just the sound of the engine of this used car struggling to keep moving, to arrive to it's destination without collapsing.
'I know.' He spoke calmly. 'But... Maybe, there are other things I can teach and show you. And that'll only be possible, if you give me one more chance.'
'One more chance?' I said
'That's right' He answered.
'Sure, everyone deserves "one more chance".'I parked the car. God was I scared. And confused, and nervous, and anxious. I can't believe that my dad is here. Like, my actual dad, and not my mom's husband. Shit, did I forget to tell him that? Oh no. Well, I hope it's not that big deal, is it?
'So, are we ever getting out of the car? Oh, and, which house is it?'
'Umm... That one.' I replied pointing at a small, white house, with a small front garden beside a little grey fence. It was in between two big new fancy houses, making mine seem smaller than it actually was. 'You like it?'
'Yeah, it's... nice.' He said not so sure about what he was saying.
'I know it's not the best, or even big, but... It keep us safe right?'
'Right.' He sighed.
'Wow.'
'What?' He asked clueless.
'You're not just nervous, you're losing your mind.'
'Why do you think that?'
'let's just say your face makes it pretty easy to figure it out.' I laughed quietly.
'Well, to be honest, I'm jut imagining your mother's reaction. And... it's a bit terrifying.' He sighed.
'Hey,' I said softly, 'You don't have to do this if you don't want to.'
'Yeah,' he said, 'I kinda have to.' He grabbed my hand. 'Let's go.'By the time I was opening the door I felt him holding his breath.
'Hey, Parker! Is that...'My mother said, stopping the sentence in the middle. 'YOU!' She finally said.
'Mom, remember last week when you found me in your office, and you didn't know what I was doing there?'
'Yes' she said firmly. I noticed a hard fist forming in her hand.
'Well, actually, I found your letters. Addressed to his house. So... I went to finally meet him.' I continued.
'Sarah, please, I wanna talk.' He said, making this situation worse.
'Oh, now you wanna talk? That's great, you took only... Oh! 17 years! Now get the hell out of my house and don't ever talk to my daughter again!'
Well, yeah. Fair enough. I thought.
'Sarah, please, I'm begging you, please. I just want to talk, give me an hour. That's all I ask.' He responded.
Silence.
'Mom...?' I asked, indicating her It was her time to respond.
'Fine, 1 hour. That's all you have.'
'Thanks.'he sighed. 'So... Are you ever going to invite me in?'
'Oh' Sarah said noticing Alex still right in front of the doorway. 'Right, come on in.' Now directing her voice to me. 'Honey!' Or so I thought,
'Yes mommy?!' A little girl's voice came form upstairs.
'Why don't you come down for a minute? Oh, and bring daddy!'
'Coming!' Now a man's voice.5 minutes later, my mom, Alex, and John(my mother's husband) were shouting to each other in the living room, leaving Riley(my 6 year old half sister) and me hearing some loose words here and there. I started this, I brought dad, It's my fault. I kept thinking.
