MARI'ELENA ORTIZ AND ROBBY KEENE WERE LIKE A MATCH MADE FROM HEAVEN. They were the only things keeping each other happy. They were two teens with the world against them, and it was like together, they could still beat it. They couldn't fathom living without the other in their lives. They were each other's anchor. But eventually, Mari'Elena discovered that she wasn't a strong enough anchor.

They both were dealing with tough shit before they met; Robby's mother was never at home, and when she was, it was with a different man every time. Meanwhile, Mari's mom had passed away, and her dad was struggling to keep a roof over their heads. Both were spiraling, and it was going to get worse until they crossed paths.

The two met at a party during Spring Break of 2017. She was invited by this guy named Trey who had been supplying her with molly for the past month, and was told that the party would have people with better stuff. Robby was there because Trey was one of his new friends. He recognized Mari from school— she was in his auto class, and they had to do a first-day-of-school assignment with her. He pulled a clearly drunk version of her away from an older, creepy guy, and his first instinct was to drive her to his apartment, as he had no idea where she lived and she was barely even conscious enough to tell him.
