[ Y/n ] hummed a song under her breath as she calmly painted her section of roses red, purposely ignoring the commotion of the others that were also tricked into painting the white roses. It was a shame there was only one shade of red, she would've liked to add depth and highlights.
Making sure she doesn't spill any paint on her new uniform, [ Y/n ] dipped the brush back for a new coat and shuffled in her Slavic Squat™ to another rose. Despite the fever dream of this situation she's in, painting the roses managed to bring a soft smile to her face.
"Wow. You're even less competent than I thought," Cater's monotoned voice broke [ Y/n ] out of her little dissociation, "but not you, [ Nickname ], you tots have a talent for this!" A charming smile was thrown her way, making her blink and huff.
"It's nothing, really. . . it's just painting." She replied, placing the paint brush back into the tin and delicately painting another rose.
"Yeah but you're being gentle, unlike these dweebs." Cater brushed off her simple remark, taking a mental note to ask her for future painting gigs ー if she's still around by that time.
"Yo, maybe you should just leave the roses white! They look perfectly pretty 'n stuff to me." Ace complained, which he further grumbled as some red paint landed in his hair. . . somehow.
"Even though I hate to agree with a redhead, he's right. Why not just leave them white? Or maybe, I don't know, have both!" Yuu criticized, huffing as he tried to reach a rose that was juuuust out of his reach from the ladder he stood on.
Curse his short king height.
"It's a matter of tradition," Cater sighed, lamenting that he had to explain this shit to the newbies, "you can't have an unbirthday party without the roses being red. Just like you can't play croquet without seven-coloured flamingos as mallets and a hedgehog for a ball.
Oh, but the roses need to be white when the garden flowers put on their spring concert. That's absolutely crucial." The third-year with the painted diamond on his cheek gestured with his hand as if this was totally normal.
"All your rules are completely insane!" The little hell-cat groaned only to hiss when another rose turned purple instead of red.
"Well, Heartslabyul is based off the Queen of Hearts," [ Y/n ] spoke up, having finished her area and walked over to the group, "it would make sense for the students of the dorm to fellow said rules."
"Right on the money, [ Nickname ]! And Riddle is all about tradition. Probably more than previous housewardens, T-B-H. I'll admit that he's, well. . . a bit extra." Cater snapped his fingers and pointed at [ Y/n ], only to grimace at the last sentence.
