Spot's POV
I went to the bar having a few drinks with my old friend Race who lived in Manhattan but recently moved to Brooklyn for work at the factory. "Listen she was outta ya league anyway. Is say yous shoulda forgot about it when you first saw her in the coach."
"You don't understand. This goirl, she makes me laugh, she's so smart, and she's got so many ideas. She can't even tell anybody them because she wasn't brought up that way. She's so scared to express herself to please others thinking she's doin something wrong all Is wanna do is listen to what she's gotta say all day just to see her smile. She makes be feel like I'm walking on air when I'm around her."
"Sounds like yous got it bad Spotty."
"Don't call me Spotty."
"Look all I'm saying is if ya want her go and get her."
"I can't it's too late for that."
"What do ya mean?" He asked and I tightened my grip on the glass taking another drink and asking the bar tender for more. "She's getting married."
"Tough break."
"Just my luck ah?" Race smiled "The luck of us old newsies. We win one strike and wes never gonna be happy again."
"Those were the times though weren't they?" I laughed. "They sure were." He replied.
I meant to walk home but somehow managed in front of Y/n's house. I looked at it for a while then up at her window. I saw the light on and smiled at the thought of her simply sitting in her room brushing her long hair or something like that. Then I saw her fiancé through the window and she stood up coming into view as well. He kissed her. Not on her cheek or her forehead but her lips. Her first kiss wasn't with me. Why the hell didn't I kiss her when I had the chance? I walked back away from the scene before me and went strait home. I was barely walking strait and managed to pass out at the docs not being able to reach my tenement. The last thing I saw was Eyepatch frowning and shaking his head at my drunken state.
I woke up feeling sick to my stomach with a hell of a headache on the floor. "The hell?" I questioned. "Yous passed out at the docs. You must have drank one to many."
"Spent quite a bit at the bar with Racetrack. Sorry we didn't invite ya it was a quick bump in and go type of plan."
"It's alright. You knows I don't like to drink anyway. Not sense it landed my behind bars."
I nodded my head and he handed me a glass of water. "Thank you." I said. "I should get going and get cleaned up. I gotta sober up." He nodded understandingly and pointed to the door. "Ya owe me." He laughed and I agreed with him laughing back with a smile and walked down a couple of doors to my tenement. I took a quick shower and put on a clean set of clothes then went outside to take a walk to try to clear my mind of Y/n yet as I stood on the docs all I could think of was her. Then I saw her. Walking with him hand in hand. Her waist looked abnormally small and I could tell she was ready to pass out any minute yet she held a smile. That gorgeous smile if only it was a real one. She frowned when she saw me then walked right passed me pretending she didn't know me at all. That stung. They headed towards the market and I fallowed hoping to have a moment when she would be alone.
Eventually he did leave her side and I quickly ran up to her. "Spot." She stated simply. "Y/n. Has yous made up ya mind."
"There's nothing to make up." Her voice was emotionless. "I am to marry him and be happy." I frowned at that statement. "I don't think ya are."
"How dare you tell me what I am or not. You haven't spoken to me for weeks... again. You're the one who continues to ignore me."
"Only to give ya time to think it over." I say defending myself.
Then a tear fell down her face as she looked at the fresh fruits they were laying out to sell. I heard her stomach growl. "Yous hungry. Didn't you eat something?"
"Yes. I did. I had an egg."
"That doesn't seem like much doll face."
"William likes it when I'm slender. He says he want's everything to be perfect for our wedding including me."
"He's starving you? And that's why yous looking like yous about to pass out."
"What does it matter to you?"
"You know very well that you matter so much to me."
"So much for that right?"
"Don't you dare say that. I know you don't wanna marry that man. You know how I know? Cuz yous still wearing the key I gave ya. It's almost been a month and you have yet to take it off ya neck." That's when her fiancé came back. "Y/n my love, is this man bothering you?" She shook her head and gave another fake smile towards him. "Not at all Will. This is a friend of mine. Not really friends. He showed me around me around Brooklyn when I moved her three months ago."
"Ah yes. Then man you spent running around the city at night with." He frowned at her and then at me. I didn't like the way he looked at her. "Spot Conlon." I said introducing myself. "William."
"I was just saying hi to y/n. She seems hungry you might wanna get her something to eat before she completely blacks out." I stated giving him a sharp glare. "I can assure you she is fine. We just had breakfast not so long ago." I gave a slight scoff with an unamused smile. "Well I better get going."
"Yes. You should." I watched them walk back to the dock then Y/n fell... Into the water. I quickly ran to the docks slipping off my shoes while William just stood there shock written all over his face. I didn't hesitate to dive in and get her. "She cant swim." I stated diving in for her. I saw her sinking deeper under the water her eyes beginning to close. I grabbed her by the waist and tore off her top and camisole then her skirt to help bring her up to the surface. I dragged her up on the docs and pressed my lips against hers breathing into her when she didn't wake up. I placed my ear against her chest. She still wasn't breathing. I tried this two more times then realized her courset must be blocking her air way. I tore that off of her too. "This isn't an excuse for you to touch her." William spoke up. "She's not breathing you idiot!" I yelled at him breathing into her again. A few more times and she started to cough up water and I held her close to me. William then quickly took off his coat and put it on her. Then I saw it. The makeup had washed off exposing her beautiful natural face then I saw the bruise on the side of her eye. I looked up and glared at him. "The hell did you do to her!" I yelled gripping his shirt ready to strangle the bastard.
"Hands off me. She's mine and I can do what I want when she is not obedient." I couldn't control my anger at that point. I hit him. Hard. Square in the face. He then tried to hit me back succeeding but I hit him again in his stomach and grabbed him by the collar until a couple of other men pulled me off of him. He backed away clutching his nose which was now I assumed was broken then took Y/n's hand which she quickly shook away. "Come. Let's go home." He stated firmly looking at her. "You don't gotta go with him." I pitched in. She looked back at me the him. "If you don't come with me imagine how disappointed your father will be with you." She moved away from him again and I smiled. "Disappointed. You were not the one who jumped in." She walked up to me and held my hand tightly and hid behind me. "You are going to regret this." He threatened pointing at her. "You too." I kept a stern and intimidating expression not moving an inch. Eventually he left and Y/n hugged me tightly and I walked her to my place.
She sat on my bed and I made her some coffee. "How long had he been hitting you?"
"Remember that night when I told you we were engaged? He saw you walk me home and I suppose he had gotten jealous."
"He hit you because he was angry with you?"
"It was my fault I talked back." I shook my head. "Not a single person should lay a hand on yous. Not even that... that bastard." She teared up and I softened up a bit controlling my anger. I wiped away her tears and she hugged me tightly. "I'm sorry. I don't know what else I was supposed to do." I rubbed my hand on the small of her back soothing her and let her cry.
