We had gotten back from my parents house all the while I kept quiet only nodding my head like a respectable... or unrespectable should behave. I am a young lady. A pregnant one at that and nothing of what I say matters unless it is for the baby. "You were very good darling. Perhaps tonight you have earned some... fun." He smiled which made me want to throw up. I almost did. "William can you please pull over the carriage?"

"What in blazes for?"

"The baby is about to get sick darling."

"Disgusting. Alright then. Pull over." He said tapping the top of the carriage. I stepped out letting the nausea hit me. William stayed in the carriage because the thought of a lady throwing up is disgraceful in his eyes but to be reasoned with if she is having a child. Bastard. I walked back in and sat down. "Right then. Off we go."

"William?"

"What is it now?" He scoffed looking a bit agitated that I wouldn't keep quiet. This made me smile. It was nice to know I could easily get to him though it isn't so nice when he is infuriated and takes it out on me physically. "May I go out to run some errands?"

"In your condition? Absolutely not. Besides I remember what happened last time you said you were going somewhere you went to a completely different place."

"What if I went with one of the maids?"

"Fine. Whatever you want. If it makes you happy then who am I to tell you no? How much will you need? You know what? 50 and you can give me back the rest of my change later." He smiled and I nodded my thank you.

"My apologies Ms. but I don't think this is such a good idea. What if master William finds out about this. You could get in so much trouble. I could lose my job or worse."

"Lily I assure you that he will not know about this and if he does find out I will make sure that he understands you were just obeying my orders and doing your job. That you tried to talk me out of it and were ready to tell on me, but I threatened you. Sound fair?" Lily nodded her head. "Great. Poker it is." We walked into the bar and I sat down at the poker table. "Ay, we don't let women, especially in your condition in here." I turned and looked at the man who was speaking. A large man with a white beard and bald head. "It's alright. I knows her." Racetrack Higgins. "Yeah?"

"Yeah. She's one of Conlon's friends." The large man growled then walked away. "Hi." I said. "Hey. And how are yous little Ms Lily?"

"I'm good uncle Race thanks."

"So what yous doin here anyways?" He lit a cigar and blew it behind him so none of it would be blown in my face and I wouldn't inhale any of the smoke. "Came to gamble." He smirked. "I knows betta. What yous really doin here and not with ya husband like yous should be?" I stayed silent not wanting to give him a real answer. "Alright tell ya what. We play a game of poker. I expect Spot showed ya how. I win yous gotta tell me what ya doin here then go home so yous can stay outta trouble and if you win yous can stay and I wont ask any questions."

"I don't see how that is fair. You have been playing for a significantly longer time than I have. And Spot told me you were the smartest kid in school. Able to count cards."

"Fine. Me vs you and lily. Lily really knows how to play. Sound fair?" I looked at Lily who reciprocated my look with a 'It's all up to you just as long as I don't get in trouble' type of stare. "Fine then. It's a deal." We shook on it as the black jack dealer shuffled then laid out the cards for us to play. Spot knocked twice trading his cards keeping his poker face on. "You can bale out now while you two can. Save ya from the embarrassment."

"No chance."

"I do. I fold." Lily said placing down her cards.

" Flush." I smiled with pride.
