Lex's Cocktail Recipes

Black Mamba

Lex's twist on a cocktail – this version of a Snakebite – a common drink in the UK – uses stout instead of lager, a modification that is often used in the United States and which fits better with calling it a Black Mamba; the drop of jalapeño hot sauce gives it a venomous bite.

Made in a pounder

1/2 pounder stout (like Guinness)

1/2 pounder cider

One drop jalapeño hot sauce

Pour the cold stout and cider into a pounder – no ice – then dramatically add a single drop of green hot sauce.

Blonde Bombshell

Lex Special – of course with a name like this, it has to be a bomb shot; Lex didn't put too much thought into this one, which is probably why she needed to supplement it with the Gin Rickey alternative.

Made in a shot glass and a pounder

1oz American blond whiskey

1 pounder almost full of Belgian blond ale (or Hefeweizen, if you're desperate)

Pour the whiskey in the shot glass and the ale in the pounder, tip the pounder slightly and drop the entire shot glass with the whiskey inside into it. For safety's sake, let the shot glass slide against the inside of the pounder; otherwise, if you have particularly bad luck, you risk cracking or chipping one or both of the glasses and ruining the drink (and possibly sending the drinker to the hospital).

Bloodbath

Lex Special – have you ever had a chocolate-covered cranberry? it's kind of like that, but with a bonus salty, blood-like tang – buwah-ha-ha!

Made in a martini glass

2 oz vodka

1 oz brown crème de cacao (also comes in white)

1/2 - 1 oz cranberry juice

Simple syrup

Cocktail salt

Use the simple syrup to wet the edge of the martini glass and dip the rim in the cocktail salt. In a pounder with ice, add the liquid ingredients, shake to chill, and strain into the martini glass.

Blue Angel

Classic cocktail – I believe this was named after the 1930 Marlene Dietrich film "The Blue Angel," not after the US Navy's precision flying team; it's a shame that it's not popular because it is pretty damn delicious

Made in a martini glass

1 oz brandy

1/2 oz blue curaçao

1/2 oz vanilla liqueur

1/2 oz half-n-half

Dash of lemon juice

Lemon wheel

Combine all liquid ingredients in a shaker with ice and shake to chill. Strain into a martini glass and garnish with the lemon wheel.

Gin Rickey

Classic cocktail – an oldie but a goodie, this classic is the official native cocktail of Washington D.C., and happens to be sugar-free, if you care about that sort of thing.
