The days had been moving slower and slower ever since Jekyll reluctantly offered to house you and your friend. Each day was a losing battle on why you ought not to bother the kind, generous, wonderful doctor. While insincere compliments could only do so much, Lucy always had some rational rebuttal. Obviously the lovelorn doctor, you gagged at the thought, could only ever agree or support her claims. With a defeated sigh, you lie back on the pillows, having lost another argument.

Lucy could only chuckle, the bickering had become a playful routine now. You couldn't complain; frankly, you were entertained by the conversation as she quickly found ways to run circles around your excuses. You genuinely admired and enjoyed her wit.

A soft hum nearby seemed to agree with you. Glancing at the aforementioned doctor, a soft pink dusted his cheeks as he let a smile crack on his lips. He waved goodbye and bid his farewell to the woman leaving for work. Your eyes narrowed as his infatuated look made you protective and somewhat possessive of Lucy. Any man was lucky to have her but they would have to go through hell before they could even deserve to. Only the densest of people would think you would ever approve of him.

He must have felt your glare as he quickly cleared his throat and began to prepare for the examination. Reaching for your hand, he quickly pulled back as if anticipating your attack. He was right to do so as you completely missed your shot, hitting air instead.

Over the past few days, it had been a challenge of whether you could catch and slap his hand. So far, you had been on a consistent losing streak. You huffed, growing tired of what seemed to be becoming a playful thing you two had with each other. Jekyll seemed to once again agree with your thoughts as he began to offer his hand instead. You stared at it, then up at him, gauging whether you were supposed to smack it or something.

"I realize you may prefer I offer and ask to begin the tests rather than just taking your hands and startling you," he explained politely. It was sincere, anyone could see it. Yet, you couldn't help but look at it with disgust and offense.

"I'm not an animal that needs to be approached slowly," you quickly retorted to the gesture as you sat up.

"Yet, neither you nor I can deny I'd get bitten if I had taken your hand any more abruptly."

You stared at him, mouth slightly agape with shock. The gall he had to compare you to an animal, like you were some wild beast that would attack upon any sudden movement.

At first, it was still possible to brush off your hostility against him as pure intuition. However, with each passing check-up, his remarks and comments had devolved into less than polite and civil snap backs. Granted, you gave no reason for him to keep up airs, but this only solidified your feelings of dislike for him. He was two-faced and a fake, only presenting composed dignity in front of Lucy. When you two were alone, nothing was held back.

Your lips twitched into an angered smirk, "What, you think I'm a dog that can be trained to "shake" once you've instilled the habit enough?"

He rolled his eyes, "A dog can be reasoned with better than you."

"And a doctor trained any better would know how to handle unruly patients."

He rubbed his face in exhaustion before he looked at you incredulously. "Oh, so you are aware of your behavior. And here I worried that you were so dense that couldn't possibly comprehend the meaning of your actions."

"Must you always view me as something less than human?"

With a defeated sigh, he began, "I am not the one constantly comparing you to an animal, Ms. (L/n)." He muttered softly, "Honestly, I worry why your choice of defense is putting words in my mouth that deprecate you as such."
