The dictionary defines life as "the condition that distinguishes animals and plants from inorganic matter, including the capacity for growth, reproduction, functional activity, and continual change preceding death". Before the child ever greets the outside world, he/she goes on an amazing journey of growth, activity, and change. At the moment of fertilization gender, eye color, hair color, ethnicity, and "countless other traits" are determined. By 22 days, the heartbeat is detectable and brain activity can be recorded by the 6th week. By 5-6 weeks, the baby is already moving in the womb and by the beginning of 18 weeks ultrasounds can detect speaking movements in his/her voice box. The scientific fact is children undergo most of their "growth and development" (a scientific requirement for something to be alive) in the womb.
