Joshua
It's halfway through our lunch break and Abby is nowhere to be seen. I've tried calling her multiple times but it goes to voicemail.
I keep getting pitiful looks from Mikey and Charlie and it's pissing me off.
I get up with my lunch wrappings and head in search of Abby before lunch is over.
My first thought is she is at the library because my girl is a nerd and bingo!
"Why is your phone off? Is your battery dead?" I close in on her.
She looks up from the book she is reading and resumes what she is doing. What the hell!
"Abby."
"What Joshua? I'm reading and I want to finish this chapter before lunch is over."
"I haven't seen you all weekend and I miss you." I lower my voice.
"Well, obviously you didn't miss me enough." What is going on with her?
"What is that supposed to mean."
"Nothing Josh, can I finish my book?" she says exasperatedly.
"Not until you tell me what's wrong."
"Nothing is wrong Josh."
"Then what is this I hear about you accepting Jasper's invitation to prom?" I literally feel like crying at this point and the blank look on her face is not helping.
"That would be correct."
"What? Why would you hurt me like that?"
"Hurt you? Joshua, I didn't hurt you as much as you've hurt me. I know I have no claim over you, but you could've told me that you were going to be late this morning instead of making me wait like a stupid idiot.
Even better, you could have told me that you are going to prom with that Anricke girl and not make me waste my money and time on finding a dress to wear to prom".
She forcefully closes her book and packs her bag. I feel my chest closing at the thought that she is leaving and we are at odds.
I gently grab her arm and halt her departure.
"I'm sorry for not telling you I was going to be late this morning. I was just too in a rush to think of much else. What do you mean taking Anricke to prom?"
"You were in such a rush, but you had time to talk to your girlfriend. Not that it matters anyways." I hear her muttering.
She tries to shake off my hold but I hold on tighter, "I do not know what you are talking about Abby".
"Like I said Josh, it doesn't matter."

"Hey honey, how was school? I made you something to eat." My mom says as I enter the house.
"It was fine. I'm gonna head to bed." I don't even spare a look at her.
I feel like my heart is being ripped out of my chest. What happened today with Abby?
I awake to darkness outside and my dad's gently shake.
"Hey bud." He greets me.
"Hi." I stretch
"How are you?" Oh man, mom has already told him.
"I'm good dad." I sit up and make to get off the bed but he blocks my way with a hand on my knee.
"What happened today at school? Mom is worried about you."
"Nothing happened. I just needed to rest." I say hoping he will let it go but he gives me that look that makes us talk involuntarily because I know the next words out of his mouth will be...
"You know I hate it when your mother is upset so you better start talking because she will worry herself until she gets a panic attack."
I sigh because I know that I've lost this round.
"Abby is mad at me." I look down at my lap.
"Why is she mad?"
"Apparently I've been ignoring her all weekend and I now have a "girlfriend" whom I rather spend my time with and whom I'm going to prom with. What the hell dad!"
I get a look.
"Sorry but she should know better, I would never do that to her. To make things worse, she accepted a prom invitation from Jasper! She bought that dress for me! And she said as much, and now she won't even talk to me so I can tell that she has it all wrong?"
I am huffing and puffing by the end of my tirade.
"Calm down bud. Now let's take it from the top. Abby is mad at you because she heard from someone that you have a girlfriend?" I nod my head
"And she accepted a prom invitation with another guy after having promised to go with you?" I nod again but add, "Well, it was more of a tacit agreement that she would go to prom with me."
"Could it be possible that she is upset that you have a supposed girlfriend and that is the reason that she accepted this Jasper's invitation?"
"I need to go to her dad, she has it all wrong. I don't have a girlfriend."
