All that bloodshed,
Crimson clover,
Uh huh.
Sweet dream was over.
My hand was the one you reached for,
All throughout The Great War.
Always remember,
Uh huh,
Tears on the letter.
I vowed not to cry anymore,
If we survive The Great War.Pin and Leafy kept talking, although it was a bit awkward. They began walking back to Coiny's home, but then something hit her.
How is she here? Why is she here? Pin felt a twisting in her stomach.
Why is she burnt the same as in my dreams?
Pin didn't know if she could bear to look at her old friend any longer. They reached Coiny's house soon enough, with Pin cleverly avoiding eye contact the whole way back.
Pin almost let Leafy in, but she said, "it's okay, Pin; I'll find an inn or something to stay in."
"Oh, um, sure." Pin walked back into the house as Leafy began to walk away. She didn't feel like talking to anyone. She said hello to Penny and N.P.M, who were playing in the hall, and went to the shared bedroom, which was empty. Pin collapsed on her bed. She stared up at the ceiling.
Why did I dream about Leafy? With the exact same burn? Is this a message? Oh, great Algebraliens, what does this mean?
But the roof gave Pin no answers, and dreams slipped around her as she fell into deep sleep.
Crimson clover.
Bloodstained.
Coiny's siblings, on the ground.
Pin realized a moment too late that they were turning the grass red.
There were the Nickels, motionless, eyes blank.
Same with Quarter.
Same with Dime.
Same with Penny. The clouds were folding around them. She looked into them and saw the faces of many objects. Their eyes were blank too. And they were calling out her name. Louder and louder, until suddenly...
It all disappeared. The bloody grass was gone. The bodies. The yelling. Pin was floating along the wind. She saw herself in the sky, like a mirror. Reflecting, moving, floating. But all around her, the clouds in her sky began shifting. They spoke to her. She continued floating. Higher and higher.
And then she fell.
Gravity seemed to start affecting her again. The mirror Pin dissappeared and she hit the ground with a thud. She woke up, half expecting to be on the ground, barely alive after the fall. But she was in her bed. It was only a dream.
Breathing heavily, Pin sat up. She felt exhausted, as if she was actually floating only a few moments ago. She still didn't want to do anything, but knew going back to sleep would only give her similar results to the first time. So, Pin got up and decided to check the mail.
The first thing she noticed when she got outside was that it was almost sunset. Shaking off the fact that she'd slept for so long, Pin went to the mailbox, and took out the only three things inside of it. Two letters, one for her and one for Coiny, and one labeled as an explanation. She got back in and called Coiny's name. When he came down, Pin explained that he'd gotten a letter. He took it and ripped it open.
"This is...concerning..." Coiny said. His shocked expression made Pin's stomach twist. "To Coiny Payments, you have been drafted for a position in The Losers' war battalion #2..."
"What?!" Pin gasped. "We're not e-ven bat-tl-ing in the war!" She ripped open her own letter.
"I guess I am now..."
"It says the same thing!" Pin cried, pointing at her own letter. "Wait! The explanation letter!"
Coiny grabbed the explanation letter and opened it. "To Coiny Payments and Pin Pointed," He muttered, "you may be confused about your employment in The Great War. It is important that you know that an enemy, possibly a spy, has been detected in our territory, allied with the city BEEP. Her name is Leafy Spring, and she is a green leaf with a half-burnt stem. If you see her anywhere is the city, please report her. Meet in the city square today at twilight."
