Ever since people started coming for my trial Kiernan has increased security around my cell. After I recovered from the wolfsbane Kiernan visited me everyday, to help with the files. Grace gives me food and she fills me in on things that are happening around the castle. It's in an uproar as they prepare for the arrival of the Alphas and Lunas, security has been tightened, and an entire wing of the palace has been opened to accommodate the guests. All these people are coming for my trial. It makes me anxious.
Every time I try to sleep, the smallest sound will wake me up, changing of guards, someone talking down the hallway, someone shifting their stance. Lily is begging to be let outside and I agree with her, but I don't think I could get outside, let alone outside this cell with the guards guarding me.
"Solena, what's on your mind?" Kiernan asks me. We're double-checking the piles making sure that the papers were placed in the right order.
"I haven't gone outside for a month," I told him. I need to shift, to hunt, to feel the wind coursing through my fur, the cold of winter biting at my nose.
"You shift into your wolf sometimes don't you?" I started shifting a week ago regularly to keep Lily from taking over completely, but it's becoming harder to placate her, I need the fresh air.
"Yes, but I need to go outside, I need to hunt, I'm still rogue." Doesn't he realize that this is hard for me? Controlling a wolf is hard as a rogue, even though I've done it all my life, it's still hard.
"As an Alpha, I can't. The other Alphas would see that and would question my power, making everyone more on edge than they already are. They would probably come after you and want to kill you. " I nod my head in understanding not wanting to put him in a dangerous situation but, I don't know how long I can hold out.
"How about we stop here for today?" I nod and wonder what will happen to me when this is over. As the trial comes closer it all seems more real that my life is in the hands of my mate and the direction it will go is up to him. So far, even though I haven't been outside, I've been mostly protected here from the elements and I've had food, and I haven't gone hungry or worried about drinking clean water, I've had a new change of clothes every week. These physical comforts have been amazing, but there's no guarantee that any of this will continue. Kiernan is learning more and more about who I am, and the things I've done. While his voice is understanding, his eyes are filled with hatred towards all the trouble I've caused. The Alpha's are probably gathering together with evidence of the crimes I've done, and crimes I didn't do, ready to take my life. If Kiernan was afraid that the Alpha's would try and destroy me outside there was nothing that could guarantee my safety.
Grace dresses me in a simple white long-sleeve jumpsuit, braids my hair down my back, and wraps it as a crown around my head. She gives me white boots that come up to my ankles.
"Are you nervous Solena," Grace asks as she takes a step back. I nod and stand up to my full height looking her in the eyes even as she stands a full head above me.
"You'll do fine, just tell the truth." Kiernan comes in and Grace bows before exiting the room. I watch her leave and my eyes train on the door.
"Solena look at me," Kiernan asks, placing his hands lightly on my shoulders. I turn my head and look him in the eye.
"Don't fight them Solena, No one will hurt you, I promise." I take a deep breath and nod.
"Are you ready Solena?" I nod and follow Kiernan through the doors. The Blue Moon Guard surrounds me and we make our way to the trial room. It's been a week since I've asked Kiernan to allow me to hunt outside and he denied my request. Lily is fighting me for control, and I'm doing my best to control her but I'm sure my eyes are switching colors.
As we move into the auditorium, silence fills the room. Holding my head high, I feel the eyes of everyone on me. Kiernan walks over to a stage and sits down on a throne in the middle, while the blue moon guard leads me to a boxed-in seat in front of a podium. They sit me down and stand in a semicircle behind me.
"We'll now start the trial for Solena Lily Midnight." Kiernan's voice booms throughout the auditorium. I jump a little in my seat and someone moves their arm to rest on my shoulder. I stiffen under their grasp and fight the urge to not fight him off.
"Don't fight them Solena, I promise they won't hurt you." Kiernan's words ring through my head.
"We'll start by going through each crime in the order in which the crimes were reported and allegedly committed by Ms. Midnight." he starts going through the crimes. Lily somewhat calms down at hearing the words coming out of Kiernan's mouth and gives me a reprieve. Maybe I can get through this trial without her interference.
"Trespassing onto Silver Moon territory and harming two members of the pack. Ms. Midnight, how do you plead?"
"Guilty," I say. And one of the Blue Moon guard members steps forward and adjusts something on the podium and shoves it in my face. I look at it suspiciously.
"Ms. Midnight can you repeat what you said into the microphone?" Kiernan asks and I look between him and the thing they shoved into my face. I look at it and move closer to it.
"Guilty," I hear my voice resound throughout the room and try not to recoil from the sound. It's so loud.
"Thank you. Sentence to be determined." The trial continues and we cover 1 year of my life as Lily Midnight. Most of the crimes I was guilty of. Fifty cases of trespassing, 30 cases of physical assault, five cases of murder, and three cases of stealing. If the trial goes by as fast as it does today, I will be sentenced by the end of the week. Halfway through Lily started fighting me for control and I haven't been able to completely subdue her. Alphas commented, saying that I wasn't even able to keep my wolf in control long enough, and how typical it was of rogues to be bad at controlling their wolves.
We walk back to my cell and Grace is already there with dinner. My stomach clenches and all the food on my plate looks revolting. I nod towards her, acknowledging her before going into the corner.
"Those Alpha's don't know anything. I don't believe any of the malicious murder accusations for a second. You don't have it in your eyes, every time someone mentions murder, you look like someone punched you in the jaw and you wince. Here eat some food, you need your strength for tomorrow." I shake my head in protest. I feel a shadow casting over me and I open my eyes to see Grace standing over me.
"You should eat a little bit." I sigh and take a bite before pushing the plate away, having no appetite.
"Solena, you need to eat." My eyes snap open and I stare at her. Images of my parents and my uncle flash through my mind. Their blood poured out onto my hands as they died. I snap.
"Get out Grace, Leave!" My voice comes out choked and raised.
"Solena..." I glare at her and she bows her head before leaving the room. I growl and pace the room back and forth. Smashing my fist into the wall, I try to wipe the image of Grace lying dead on the floor in a pool of blood.
For hours, I fight an imaginary opponent, hand-to-hand combat, using kicks and punches that I haven't used on a person in a long time. Frustrated, I eventually fell into a heap in the middle of the ground. The food that Grace left suddenly looks appetizing and I scarf it all down. If anyone dares to harm her, I would need strength to fight them off. Someone is walking quickly down the hallway toward my cell and I stand up urgently ready to fight.
"What's wrong Solena?" Kiernan's voice filters through the closed door. I relax slightly, clenching and unclenching my fists as I bring them down. The door opens and Kiernan rushes in and kneels on the ground so we're on the same level.
"What if someone hurts Grace?" I blurt out.
"What do you mean? No one would ever hurt her." I shake my head.
"She publicly defends me, others will take note of that and will look at her with the same hatred they do for me." Hatred can turn into murder if not put aside. Many who've looked at me like that have tried to take my life. My life, their life, someone lives and someone dies. So many people have died, it's unnecessary anymore too.
"No one will hurt Grace, Solena, and if they do I will personally deal with it." Kiernan puts his hand on my shoulder.
"No, no, no she can't be associated with me at all. No one else needs to get hurt because of me." I shudder to think what could happen to her.
"Solena, I'll assign Carter to watch her if you're that worried, but I don't think anything is going to happen." I wish I could share his faith. I've seen firsthand how Alpha's treat the people who side with me.
