Carter's P.O.V.

When Carter awoke in the morning she immediately rushed out to the kitchen to see if her dad was there and to her surprise he was. She looked out the window to see two caribou hanging in the tree. Her dad walked into the kitchen and gave her a big hug.

“I missed you; did you keep everything under control? I saw that you enjoyed the salmon we made. How was it? Did you see what we got? Jase killed the one on the left and Koby killed the other one. Talk about a rough walk back home, I didn’t expect to kill two on one trip. I was figuring we would have to go back out,” he said smiling.

“I missed you too… somewhat that is. I liked having the place to myself; it was nice to not have Jase and Remi telling me to do this and that. And yeah the salmon was really good; it was mom’s recipe so it couldn’t be bad. But yeah I saw that, that’s good though we needed the meat,” Carter replied.

Just then Joe Nichols walked into the kitchen and smiled and waved at Carter. Carter immediately felt chills run down her spine. There was something about him that gave her an uneasy feeling in the pit of her stomach.

“Dad, where’s the boys? I want to go see how they thought the trip was,” Carted asked.

“Since when do you care how they thought the trip went?” he replied.

“I don’t know but I just want to ask.”

“Okay, well they are out in the barn getting there knives ready to skin the...”

Before he finished Carter was out the door and at the barn. She walked slowly into the part where the boys were. She stopped in the doorway when she saw what they were holding.

“A wolf pup! How did you get that? Why did you shoot it!” anger flashed through her as she walked up to Jase who was holding the pup.

“Joe shot it, this morning when we woke up he saw this little dude walking all funny near a thicket of pines. Swore it had rabies and even dad thought it did, so he shot it,” said Jase defensively.

“That’s horrible! Why would you keep it and what are you going to do with it now?”

“I don’t know, Joe said he would probably mount it. He thinks he could send it to his brother’s shop in Washington because there are a few people down there that like things like this.”

“Well stop touching it. What if it really did have rabies and you’re holding it!”

Jase immediately dropped the dead pup as if he hadn’t thought about touching the rabid animal. Carter walked away just in time to see Joe and her dad arguing through the kitchen window. She figured it was just over the dead pup so she continued walking to the chicken shed.
