Feeling refreshed from a good night's sleep, I sat down at the breakfast table, savoring every bite of my meal. As I ate, I couldn't help but think back to the events of the previous evening. The memory of my conversation with a girl from America put a wide smile on my face, much to the surprise of my mother.
"Did you get another A on a test?" she inquired, her voice laced with curiosity.
"Something even better, Mom," I replied, my tone brimming with excitement.
With my parents off to work and my little sister accompanying my mother to school, I was left to my own devices for the day. I delayed leaving for a while, sending a good morning text to the American girl. Then, I followed up with an expression of my joy from the previous night's conversation. I worried that I sounded too needy, but decided that mentioning how wonderful the conversation was, was like adding spices to a bland dish.
As I walked to school, my mind was consumed with thoughts of the girl. I felt like I had to tell someone, so, I confided in a friend as soon as I arrived. The moment I entered the classroom, my friend saved me a seat, as if he knew I had news to share. We were both science students, so we chose the Arabic session as the perfect venue for our chitchat.
"Guess what happened?" I asked, my excitement palpable.
To which my friend replied with a look of disbelief. "What did you do this time?" he asked, already anticipating something out of the ordinary.
I spoke with the utmost confidence, "I met an American girl two days ago, and we are having the best conversations ever. I think this is going places."
His reaction was one of amazement, and we agreed to meet at his house after class to verify my claims. As soon as the bell rang, we dashed across the street to his home. I used his phone to log into Facebook, and a message from Jasmine popped up immediately. My friend was overjoyed, and he acknowledged my success with a resounding, "You bloody did it, you little nerd."
We talked for a while, and I informed her that I would be unavailable that night due to a lack of data and funds. That evening, I tried to catch some sleep, but my eyes refused to close, and my mind kept wandering. I regretted not saving enough, so I secretly pocketed some dirhams from the dinner table to use the following day without my parent's knowledge.
The next morning, I rushed to the store to replenish my data. I had breakfast and then opened Facebook, but there was no reply from her. My heart began to race, and I started to consider all possible reasons for her lack of response. Was Facebook down? Was my data malfunctioning? Had someone stolen her phone? Was this the shortest love story in history? Had I said something wrong? These were the questions that plagued my mind at that moment.
As I tried to calm myself down, I realized that I had become quite invested in this girl. It was just a few days ago that I had met her, but she had already become an important part of my life. I wondered if this was the beginning of a new chapter, a new adventure that would lead me to discover new things about myself.
With each passing moment, my anticipation grew, and I waited anxiously for her reply. As I looked out the window, I couldn't help but think about the future and what it might hold. Would I get to meet her in person? Would we become more than just friends? The possibilities were endless, and I was excited to see where this would take me.
