human

i have never once felt human

from the time i looked in the mirror and stitched my mouth into a smile

to the time i looked down the tunnel and realized there would never be anything on the other side

when i let words fall from my lips like a broken jigsaw puzzle

i have tried time and time again to feel the dull thud of my heart

but it lays silent all day, every day

i have studied the cosmos wishing they would bring me back my humanity

but when i look up into the sky, they seem to dim at first glance

all the stars have faded

and i into them.
