The next morning I found Sarah already up staring off into the distance, deep in thought, only turning her head to acknowledge me once I had made my presence known.
I couldn't help but feel for her, as her eyes were practically swollen shut from spending most of the night crying, cherry red pigment lining all of the features on her face.
"Aw, baby," I sighed, making my way to the couch she was sitting on, "You might need an ice pack or something."
"I can barely see," she admitted with a sniffle, then a laugh as she can make out my expression, "Fuck. Is it that bad?"
"Don't worry, JJ still looks worse."
She smiled, "Okay. That's good," she said quietly, and mostly to herself. "That's good to hear."
But, it was clear that my words had barely registered in her head, as she spoke like someone who was about to change the conversation to something they needed to get off their chest. "Hey, what is it?" I asked her.
"It's just... I know you've poked fun at me before when it came to the... overlap... with Topper and John B. But... well... I guess I just don't want you to think that I think that's normal," she explained slowly, "Because that's—I swear that's not who I am."
"Sarah," I said, reaching out and taking her hand, "I can see how this whole thing's got you all fucked up in the head. Don't worry, alright? What's important is that you left before things escalated—"
"—But what if I hadn't left, Lex? What if you hadn't been there?"
I shrugged, "Well, I guess we don't know what would've happened then," I admitted, not sure what else to say. "But... do you actually think you would've had sex with him?"
She considered it for a moment, "No, actually," she realized, frowning. "I hadn't really thought much about what I'd do past, the whole, kissing him back, part."
I had to stifle a laugh, as every part of me wanted to point out the obvious fact that she clearly wasn't even that attracted to him, as her face had contorted in what could only be described as mild disgust. "So, it's the kissing bit that you're hung up on," I concluded, trying to make myself seem serious enough about our discussion, regardless of my lingering smile. "Which, is obviously still an important part, I can't argue otherwise."
"It's like... the most important part, Lex! I fucked up. I fucked up by even just thinking about it." I could tell that Sarah was on the verge of tears, as she grabbed a chunk of her hair in frustration, then added, "I can't talk to John B about it yet. I know that might be a conflict of interest for you and JJ, and I can't force you not to say anything... but... I need more time to get my thoughts in order."
