Camilla watched the cursor on the computer screen blink at her over and over again, but she was too tired to actually realize what she was looking at. Actually, if it hadn't been for her daily status reports, she would've forgotten how long she had been in Portland since each day of fighting seamlessly blended in with the next.

It took over a week, but they finally reclaimed the Org's Portland Base after it had fallen and was commandeered by the largest Exodos attack they had seen so far. While many of the officers and trainees were spending the night celebrating their success, Camilla was having enough trouble just trying to type up everything that had happened in the past twenty-four hours when all she could remember was violence and death.

The weather outside didn't help much either with a constant stream of cold rain pouring from the sky. While most of the tents at the makeshift base camp were heated, the admin tent was kept cool for all of the computers inside, and most guardians avoided using the computers because of it. The only ones who didn't have a choice were those required to submit daily status reports, such as squad captains or independent guardians like Camilla. But at that moment, Camilla was debating skipping her report for the day and simply calling it a night.

A chilly gust of wind blew through the flaps of the admin tent, sending papers from the desks around her flying. As their owners cursed and jumped to their feet, Camilla waved a hand and planted all of the papers firmly back to the desks below them. The other guardians turned and stared at her in silence for a moment before quickly muttering their thanks, to which Camilla simply replied with a silent nod. And when they began sifting through the papers to find what belonged to them, Camilla turned back to the computer she sat in front of and wrapped herself even tighter in her jacket. It was only in the low-fifties, but Camilla felt like she was freezing.

She gave up on her report a few minutes later, only bothering to type in the approximate time they reclaimed the base before submitting the sparse document. While she hurriedly logged out and stood to leave, she could feel the stares of the other guardians in the tent following her, but she didn't bother to acknowledge any of them as she hurried outside.

Camilla headed directly to her tent, keeping her head down to avoid both the rain and recognition from others. Thankfully, the rain was pouring hard enough that there was hardly anyone else around, but she didn't want to take any chances and leave an opening for someone to stop her for a chat.

Without enough energy to protect herself from the downpour, Camilla was soaked to the bone, and all she could think about was getting someplace warm. Her first choice would be back in LA, wrapped in the safe embrace of Elsie's arms. But she was miles away from home, so her makeshift quarters would have to do.

Thankfully, all of Camilla's roommates were either just as tired or antisocial as she was, so most of them paid her no mind as she entered the tent and passed by them to get to her rack. It was probably the only benefit of being deployed independently, since everyone else in her quarters was in the same position that she was, and therefore were equally exhausted from being sent from city to city at the Org's whim.

Camilla never thought she would miss being deployed with a squad, but she did. She missed her squad, and having some sense of stability as the world crumbled around her. She missed LA and its sunny weather. She missed her occasional talks with Hitomi, and she actually did miss her cousin's birthday several weeks ago. But most of all, she missed Elsie, and the feeling of waking up knowing that Elsie was right beside her simply from her warmth.

She guessed this is what it felt like to be homesick. It was a strange feeling, one that Camilla had never truly felt before, and one that she didn't want to feel any longer. But there wasn't anything she could do about that, and all she could do was curl up in her rack with only her thin blanket to keep her warm throughout the cold, autumn night.
