Jamal’s phone buzzed in his pocket as he steered his car toward his childhood home. He glanced at the screen and saw his sister’s name. She rarely called him, so he knew something was wrong.

After parking his car, he hurried inside, where his family was waiting for him. His sister was red-eyed and looked like she hadn’t slept in days. His mother was making tea, and his father was pacing around the living room.

“What’s wrong?” Jamal asked.

His sister took a deep breath. “It’s James. He’s addicted to drugs.”

Jamal’s heart sank. James was his younger cousin, and he had grown up alongside Jamal and his sister. He was like a brother to them, and hearing that he was in trouble sent a feeling of dread through Jamal.

“How bad is it?” Jamal asked.

“Bad,” his sister said. “He’s been missing work, and he’s hardly eating anything. We tried talking to him, but he just gets defensive and denies that anything is wrong. We don’t know what to do.”

Jamal sat in silence for a while, thinking. He knew he needed to help his cousin. James had been through a lot and deserved better than this.

“I’ll talk to him,” Jamal said finally. “But we’ll have to handle this delicately. He needs to know we’re here for him, and that we’ll help him get through this.”

Over the next few days, Jamal spent time with James, trying to understand what had led him down this path. He realized that James had been dealing with some heavy emotional issues that had triggered his addiction. Jamal knew he couldn’t fix everything, but he could support his cousin through this battle.

He took James to rehab, and for the first few weeks, he visited him every day, telling him positive stories and sharing memories from their childhood. James slowly began to emerge from his shell and began to make progress towards his sobriety.

It was a long road, but with Jamal’s support, James was finally able to get his life back on track. Their family was reunited, and although the situation had been tough, it had brought them closer together.

Jamal realized the importance of family ties. When times were tough, they would always be the ones to stand by your side. He was grateful for his family, and even though things hadn’t been easy, he knew they would always be there for each other.
