Slouching down into the seat, two golden irises darted around the restaurant. The place was filled with people and workers strolling around the area. The lights were dimmed to give off the "romantic" vibe. It made the male shudder bit. This wasn't something he was into or in fact, used to at all. To him, it made everything awkward. Moments later, basket filled with warm garlic bread, along with a drink he had ordered prior had been sat on the table in front of him and his friend, Wes, as they waited in silence. There was some conversation but it quickly died off, unsure of what else to say.Their heads were now buried into their phones, scrolling through their social media feeds and immediately getting off and shortly going back on, trying to pass the time. Simultaneously, Wes would grab some of the bread and eat it, while Namil left it alone.
When he finally felt the slightest bit of hunger, he lifted his head and extended his hand to reach for the bread but there was nothing. He would put his hand down and slouch back into his seat again.
"Deadass, you gotta be the fattest nigga in the world." Namil laughed as he watched Wesley eat up the last bread that was in the middle of the table for the males and their dates.
"What? You wasn't eating it. They'll bring some more back—hopefully." Wesley spoke with a mouthful. "Aye, what do you think they're doing?"
"Who? Yara and Nevaeh?" Namil queried. Wesley nodded his head before wiping the crumbs off of his face with his sleeve and tossing his head back a bit to get the overgrown locs out of his face.
"Shit, ion know. Girls take a long time to get ready. Maybe they in the bathroom gettin' lit while we sit here in awkward silence." He answered.
"Damn—well I wanna get lit too. That ain't fair."
"Should've just called up the bros to get on COD and called it a night." Namil sighed. Soon enough, two familiar girls walked in, laughing as they walked closely together.
The red haired girl sat down at the booth beside Namil. Her long fiery locs touched her thighs. It was something about a girl with locs that gave Namil butterflies. He wasn't really into the romantic stuff and he never considered himself a romantic person. The male always cringed when it came down to that stuff. Even a kiss made him feel odd.
"We thought y'all wasn't gone show up." Wesley mumbled before taking a sip of liquid acid he called Sprite.
"Well, y'all girl wanted to have a smoke break." Nevaeh spoke up, her eyes darting away from Wesley and over to Yara.
"See, you ain't even have to tell them my business." Yara said squinting. "We could've kept that on a hush."
"I'm not surprised." Namil snickered. The male would reach for a couple of her locs and wrap them around his fingers, his bracelets jingling as he shook his wrist to bring it back closer to his hand. "She always smoking some shit."
"Bro, go to hell. Like seriously." Yara playfully rolled her eyes at Namil, making the male smile and she would finally exchange a smile back.
The group spent their time at the restaurant, catching up on lost time with each other and laughing together about specific memories or jokes and of course, eating dinner before they had forgotten. When it was about time for them to go home, they'd pay and make their way back to their cars, saying their goodbyes to each other before going home.
The sky was clear of any clouds that night. The only thing that remained in the sky was the blanket of stars that sparkled brightly over the city and the moon which hung high over the horizon. Streets began to fall silent as the night approached midnight. At this point, there were only two people awake. These two would lie on the ground, relaxing as they gazed up at the stars and talking about whatever came to mind.
A hand extended upward, pushing the tight curls out of his face, then coming back down and draping over Yara's shoulder as she rested her head onto his chest.
"Not gone lie, I'm glad that's over." Namil said, referring to the double date that they were just on. He enjoyed it to a certain extent but he thought it was awkward and he was wondering why he even agreed or thought it was a good idea. "I really wanted to go home."
"I didn't wanna go either, but Nevaeh insisted, so I just said fuck it." Yara replied while she drew circles on the male's chest with her finger. "I was really losing my shit earlier 'cus I didn't know what to put on."
"Shit, no reason to try and be fancy, especially if that's not ya style. But I understand the effort."
"Yeah, you get it."
"Aye, I know you probably don't like bringing this up but like . . . how come you know started acting the way he did? I genuinely thought y'all was cool."
Yara sighed. He was right, she didn't like bringing Kevin up, especially now that she's back in a happier relationship with Namil, rather than being yelled at and threatened for nothing like she was with Kevin.
"He started up the abuse shit because I figured out he was fuckin' on other females a while back. I just gave him the benefit of the doubt because I really didn't have the time to be arguing wit a nigga over a female. I just started being a lil distant. He asked me why I was distancing myself and I told him how I felt and then—yeah. I stopped letting him touch me and I genuinely didn't like talking to him 'cus it was awkward to me."
"So he was just mad 'cus you distanced? Weird." Namil mumbled, trying to put some sort of input onto the rant. "How bad was it?"
"He didn't take anything well. I couldn't go anywhere by myself for the longest time. He was just starting to let me go off on my own. And I guess he assumed I still had feelings for you, so it made him angrier. After he said I couldn't talk to you, you were always on my mind after that. Way more than usual."
"Yeah, I get it. I'm glad you got away from bro when you did. You was mad brave for kissing me in front of him like that."
"I did what I had to do. He already fucked me up emotionally and physically. I just made his fear a reality . . . I just hope you don't get involved." Yara looked up at Namil with innocence sparkling in her eyes. He would look down at her and smile, rubbing her cheek.
"Ain't nothing gone happen to me if that's what you worried about." Namil reassured. "That nigga not coming near you as long as I'm still around."
