Today was way warmer than usual now that the June weather had been settling in. The sun beamed down on the city of Brooklyn and the sky was clear of clouds. It was a perfect day. Kids were outside playing at the park and the older population would walk around just enjoying the weather and buy themselves something from the Deli. Back at the park, a group of teenagers, mixed with boys of different ages had been playing basketball while a set of girls sat on the sidelines, watching. A familiar male with short black locs and a visor would dunk the ball into the rim and catch it as it fell down quickly into his palms.
The male would remove the visor and wipe the sweat off his face with the white wife-beater he wore. He tugged the ends of his basketball shorts, lowering them a bit from his waist to give himself some air and he'd walk over to the set of girls, sitting beside them.
"Tired already?" Yara raised an eyebrow as she examined her tired friend as he held the basketball against his side with his arm.
"It's hot as fuck out here, of course I'm tired." Jay replied, reaching into his pocket for his lighter and a backwood, shortly lighting it after he was able to reach for it. "Want some?"
She would nod and take the wood from Jay's extended hand and take a hit. Yara held the wood between her lips for a moment before quickly taking a picture of herself and sending it to Namil, teasing him since he said he'd take a break from smoking for a couple weeks.
"Damn, let that nigga live. He just tryna get his lungs right." Jay laughed before snatching the wood back from Yara, making her laugh also.
"Aye, I understand but teasing him makes it fun. If he starts back smoking again that's on him. Ian do nothing." She said with a grin.
"Are y'all always like that? Y'know-the teasing part?" Taniyah queried before taking the wood from Jay, who had passed it to her next. Sometimes it was odd to see her and Jay getting along when they were always bickering at work.
"Hell yeah, it's fun. He was always teasing me, so I'm getting my get back." Yara answered as she removed the bandanna from her head.
To her, it felt like the two never even broke up. It was more like they just took a break. Yara didn't even wanna consider Kevin as a relationship. She wanted to forget about them ever being together entirely but she knew that would be a little hard, since people were always bringing him up to her.
"That's a tough kid. You always ode it when you "get ya get back." Jay put his visor back on his head and took the wood back from Taniyah. "Aye, let's go up the street and get something to eat. I'm hungry as fuck."
"You off?" David queried as he jogged up to the group, his long curly hair bouncing on his shoulders as he did.
"I'm just going to get some food and I'll be back." Jay assured. "You want something?"
"Yeah, you can bring me something. Can you get some chips too?"
"Never mind nigga, just come with us. You asking for too much." Jay sighed. Though David was sixteen, could handle himself, and had his own money, Jay always made sure his younger brother was safe. He wasn't sure how he'd feel if another incident regarding his brother happened.
The four would begin to walk away from the park and up the street, making their way to the nearby Mcdonald's. Walking distance, it was a good five minutes away but it felt longer than that since they were walking and not driving or even riding a bike.
"Yo bro, it's mad hot out. I just might go in after this." David said before taking a sip of the slushie he had gotten from Mcdonald's.
"At least we not in Texas or Cali. We'd be evaporating by now." Taniyah said.
"We'd be dead in Texas. Ain't it like one-ten out there?" Jay queried. "I know NYC can be hot but fuck."
"Let's just be happy we don't stay in the south. I know niggas in the south is on fire." Yara added.
The girl's phone would vibrate against her thigh as a notification came through. Yara reached into her pocket, pulling out her phone and flipping it right side up in her hand.
𝐓𝐄𝐗𝐓 𝐅𝐑𝐎𝐌 👹: mi corazónnnnnnn heyyyyyy ilyyyyyy i want a cookie btw can you come oer **over
Yara stared at the non-sober messages that Namil sent and only smiled. Today was one of those days when Namil got high and just texted her, not really knowing exactly what he was talking about.

"Yo, is that ya mans?" David queried, leaning his head over Yara's shoulder to read the messages between her and Namil. Yara quickly put her phone down into her pocket.
"What was y'all chattin' about? Shit looked weird lowkey." David continued.
"Damn you all in a nigga business . ." Yara mumbled.
Later on that day, Yara finally made it to Namil's place like she promised. She carried a black plastic bag filled with snacks and drinks. Most of the snacks being for Namil since she knew he had the munchies. The screen door would open, screeching as Namil pulled it back. He stood there shirtless in the doorway with a blunt hanging loosely between his fingers. He looked tired and he reeked of weed. The male's light brown curls sat flatly on his head like a shrub and the strands of hair draped over his tired, red eyes.
"Hey, Namil." Yara smiled as she gazed up at her exhausted and non-sober boyfriend. He would wave, making it evident that he didn't feel like actually using his words at the moment. The male glanced down, noticing the bag and his eyes lit up. A smile was painted onto his face now.
"Yo, you remembered to get my cookie!" He grinned.
"Well, if I forgot you'd be upset. Plus, you kept texting me about it-it was literally impossible for me to forget." Yara explained.
"Deadass, this is why I love you." Namil said. He spun on his heels and made his way back upstairs to his room, Yara following closely behind him.
"I love you more."
With Namil, saying that was so easy to her. It didn't feel like she was lying to him or being forced to say such a thing. With him, she couldn't help but feel secure and comfortable, unlike with Kevin. Keeping Namil close was her best idea.
