1000 years ago, Heian Era

"I heard the Fujiwaras are offering a daughter from the branch family to seal the peace treaty with Ryomen Sukuna."

"The branch family? Isn't their young girl a witch, too? They should've burned her to death as soon as they got the chance."

"What can you say? They must have thought marrying her off is an easy way to get rid of two misfortunes at once."

A rough, calloused hand took my arm and pulled me away from the crowd, awaiting the arrival of the most dreaded sorcerer by the city gate.

It was my brother, Sakuya.

"Onee-sama, we have to return to the residence."

I turned my back from the words of the peasants and led the way. "Let us go."

Sensing the tension as we walked, Sakuya attempted to lighten up my mood with a small conversation.

"Aren't those two the head of Gojo clan and the Inumaki clan head's sister?," Sakuya gushed, signing east with his head. "What do you think, Onee-sama? I'm going to bet there will be a marriage announcement soon."

Nodding along, I gave in and leaned to my brother to share the secret. "They're connected by a red string. In their case, it's rather strong. It'll probably transpire to their next lives and so on."

Those strings...

I could see fate.

I was born with the power to see fate in the form of threads. Different colors indicated different meanings and connections, but the most relevant ones were the white string that indicated life, the black string that showed desire, and the red string...

The only string with a definite and unquestionable meaning. It was said to be the string that connects humans with their soul's counterparts.

Soulmates.

Despite the things I could offer with this gift, my existence was frowned upon. Humans hated destiny. They would do everything to destroy it and forge their own paths.

In the same way, I was something for them to destroy.

Noticing how my expression darkened again, Sakuya asked, "Should I apply as your personal guard so you won't be lonely in your new residence, onee-sama?"

My footsteps began to slow. "And what? Hinder your chances of ever getting married?"

Sakuya grinned, his even teeth in display. "So I really am getting married? With whom?"

The corners of my lips lifted upwards. "Hmm... I can tell you everything, but who am I to play god?"

"That is not fair," he gasped dramatically and clutched his chest. "Onee-sama, just give me a clue, please! So I'd know who I can ask Okaa-sama to pair me with."

I gave him a small smile, masking the sorrow in my eyes as I once again saw the white thread attached to his little finger stopping halfway before his feet.

How could I ever tell him he would not be able to marry?

My brother was to die, soon.

"She's an amazing woman," I replied, my head lowered. "And you're both gonna have a good family with tons of little yous running around the house."

"Onee-sama." Sakuya's tone softened. He placed a comforting hand on my shoulder. "If Ryomen Sukuna does not treat you well, please write to me, and I'll do everything I can to get you out of that marriage."

He thought I was saddened about that forced matrimony, but I could not care any less.

I had always believed in destiny simply because I could see it, but for once, I hoped a miracle would happen and the white thread on my brother's little finger would reconnect to the heavens.

"I will, Ichihara-dono," I teased, standing on the tip of my toes to pat his head. "You have finally outgrown me, heavens!"

Sakuya... Forgive me for being selfish.

I just don't want you to face the unhappiness of knowing what lies ahead.

Just as I was about to pull my hand away, something strange caught my eye.

A crimson string hung loosely from my hand, tied to my little finger.

Red string?

With whom?

"It seems Ryomen Sukuna has arrived," my brother spoke in a low, grim tone.
