Olive's POV
After hours of rummaging through my closet full of sweaters, sweatshirts, and other baggy clothes, Harper and I finally found something that looked decent enough for a date.

I went into the bathroom to change before returning to my room. Harper nodded in approval, while Khaleesi purred in her lap.

I was wearing a solid cropped white tee with a rustic orange colored corduroy mini overall dress. I don't remember buying it, but I must have liked it if it was in my closet.

"I like it. You look-" Her eyes fell down to the socks I wore underneath my black doc marten boots. "No." She looked back up at me. "It's supposed to be a date, Olive."

"But I like these," I said with a giddy smile, clicking the heels of my shoes together as if I were Dorothy trying to get back home to Kansas. I was wearing black socks with a variety of cat breeds wearing glasses. "They are cute and fun." And they make me happy.

"You're right," Harper said in agreement. "They are kind of cute. What do you think, Khaleesi?" My Calico meowed in response, seeming to approve of my socks as well.

When I heard the doorbell ring, I panicked because I still had to put on makeup and do something with my hair. "Go stall your brother," I told Harper before racing into the bathroom.

Thanks to all those Youtube videos I watched when I was twelve, I knew how to apply my makeup in five minutes. When I was done applying a coat of clear gloss, I quickly added two french braids and pulled all of my hair up into a high ponytail.

Pleased with my appearance, I tried not to trip as I raced down the hall. I slowed down when I got to the stairs, wanting to appear cool and nonchalant even though I was bursting with excitement.

My breath hitched when I saw Hayden in the living room. He was dressed in a plain white shirt with a black long sleeve shirt and white sneakers. I noticed the gold chain around his neck and nearly melted at the sight. I've always been a sucker for chained necklaces.

Hayden was talking to his sister, or rather Harper was talking to him. She was letting him know what she would do to him if he screwed this up.

Neither one has noticed me yet.

"Calm down, Harps. I'm not going to hurt her- again." Something unreadable flashed across his face, but disappeared once he saw me.

He looked up at me through long, dark lashes, the corner of his mouth lifting. I wish I didn't blush so much, but it was hard not to when he was looking at me like I was the most beautiful girl he's ever seen.

When I reached the bottom of the stairs, I made my way over to him and smiled. "You ready?"

He nodded, his eyes taking in my attire. He chuckled when saw my socks. "Why am I not surprised," he said, the question sounding more like a statement.

"Do you like them?"

"Mhm. They're adorable."

"I know right."

We stared at one another for a moment, simply enjoying each other's presence.

Luckily, there was no real rush to get out of the house. My dad was occupied with Nora for the night. They went to some fancy restaurant near the beach. My dad already told me he wouldn't be back until morning. Seems like those two are having fun. Good for them.

"I got you something," Hayden murmured, handing me the blue gift I hadn't noticed was in his hand until now.

"Really? You didn't have to get me anything."

"Oh, but I did."

He watched attentively as I set the bag down and reached in to pull out what was inside. I held up the white and blue soccer jersey with our school's logo on the front before flipping it to the back.
