IT HAD BEEN the day the group returned from the outpost that everything went to shit. Devin had expected it to be a joyous night, one that celebrated the survival of their people- well, perhaps not celebrated considering the morbid way they'd ensured their food supply but she'd been expecting some expression of relief. Instead, she'd been woken by a slammed door and the thudding of heavy boots descending the stairs at one in the morning.

"That didn't sound good," Leo observed, peering wearily at the door.

Devin swivelled her legs out of bed, brushing a hand over Noel's head to calm him. The feline had assumed the hunting position the second the bang had sounded out through the house. "No, it didn't. I'm gonna go check."

"Do you want me to come?" Leo offered.

"No, it's okay." Devin stood up, approaching the door. "Sit with Noel, scratch under his chin, he likes that."

She pushed the door open quietly and stepped into the hall to find Eugene stood awkwardly outside Abraham and Rosita's bedroom with a half-chewed cookie in his hand. "Please don't tell me you're... spying on them again."

"I don't believe such an opportunity will be arising again," Eugene replied indignantly, turning on his heel to face her.

Devin rolled her eyes. It was far too late for her brain to process his eccentric words. "What?"

Eugene put the remainder of the cookie into his mouth, and then he chewed and swallowed it before responding, "He stormed out. She's in there cryin', I believe the explanation to that could be deduced by a simple-minded fellow."

"Shit..." Devin raked a hand through her hair, she only ever took her braids out when she was going to bed. "Did you say anything to her?"

"I asked her if she tried one of those cookies."

"Oh, my god. Eugene!"

Eugene looked utterly bewildered. "I don't see the problem here."

"Of course, you don't." Devin moved him aside with her arm, approaching the door of Abraham- no, Rosita's bedroom. "Just go to bed. I got this."

"Have you tried one of those cookies?"

"Shut up about the damn cookies."

Usually, she'd knock before entering but it didn't seem like a time for pleasantries so she just pushed the door open. Rosita rarely cried, she was good at holding her emotions in. She was tougher than just about anyone. It was something Devin had always admired her for.
