It was raining bad, and the wind was just making everything worst. Laura was trying to hide herself under a tree, while wishing all that water could stop. The storm noises seemed to be competing with her belly to see which one was making a louder noise. When was the last time she had eaten something? With just one thin wet jacket covering her skinny body, and a worn-out pair of boots, she has been trying to survive in the streets for now 9 months. Living in the crazy, not to add very dangerous, streets of L.A. gave her the opportunity to see the world. But not the fairytale one. The real, rash and broken world. From time to time, she would get a few gigs here and there. Pennies to go by and survive. But noting that could keep her fed for more than a week.
The hard wind made the thick rain drops ricochet again her face as Laura shivered and tightened her jacket around her body, wrapping her arms around her malnourished body, trying to keep warm to no avail.
What she did to deserve all that? She couldn't remember when it all stared to go downhill. Or that's what she would repeat to herself, at least. It was easier to lie to herself than to open a door to a past she had no desire to revisit anytime soon.
As she briefly pondered about her own disgrace, a loud thunder roared across the sky and the rain intensified even more. Laura looked up, rethinking her idea of standing underneath a tree when lightning kept cutting the sky like power light. However, she didn't have much time to change her mind. Her vision blurred and darkened. The last thing she could feel was that her head killing her. Another thunder, followed by lightning, coming down the sky surrounded Laura as her body limped and crashed against the concrete.
______Fluttering her eyes open, Laura blinked a few time before adjusting her eyes to the dim light coming through a window right in from of her. The curtain wasn't closed all the way through and beams of sunlight peeked inside the wonky-colored room she was in.
Propping her body up a bit, she looked around the bedroom, with no clue of where she was. Her heart started beating up her mouth, as she wheezed a bit trying to calm down the panic settling in, as she realized that it could all be happening again. Where was she?
In the midst of her derision, she felt her stomach scream loud and she realized then that something was smelling really good. What was it? She sniffed the air and was hit by the glorious, warm smell of fresh coffee being brewed somewhere near the room the was in.
She couldn't understand why, but somehow that realization calmed her down slightly. Maybe, jut maybe, she was safe.
Putting her fingers through the ends of her still damp hair, she tried to calm herself down. Boy, she needed a shower, as she realized how tangled her hair was. As she pulled them, she felt a sharp pain ran through her head, down her neck. Laura stared to try and remember what could have caused that but her attention was caught by something else.
For the first time in those few minutes she was awake, she intently looked around the room she was in. It was a simple bedroom. Plain walls, a beat up chestnut dresser, clothes scattered on top a lime green rug and random band posters glued on the walls, along with what seemed to be family pictures. Next to the bed she was in, the nightstand was covered in gun wrap, some change and a half-empty glass of water. Pushed against the wall, there was lamp and a picture frame. Five, blonde-headed teenagers stood with cheese smiles, hugging each other. Four boys and one girl.
Curious to see it from up closer, Laura grabbed the picture frame, holding it firm with one hand while she adjusted the pillow behind her to rest her body against the bed frame.
From left to right, they all looked very much alike. Clearly siblings, if she wouldn't dare say they were quintuples. Something about them seemed so light, happy. Two words Laura couldn't use to describe her own life.
It has been so many years of running and hiding that she couldn't remember the last time she had had a truly happy day. It was so hard to become invisible, to never get caught. Laura got so good at it. To vanish without trace. To desapear and keep it low.
No friends, no connection and not home.
But now, as she sat on top of red covers that clashed so bad with the rug, she realized that she could be in some serious danger. If they found her... Gosh, no. They couldn't... Right? She had been so careful, and this place was way too nice to be...
Laura felt the panic return full on as she realized that maybe she had been staying on that bedroom way longer than she should. It was time to go. She couldn't be found. She had to get out of there.
Laura tried to stand up but didn't even make it out of the bed before her head screamed. The sharp pain she had felt came back twice as intense and her eyes blurred. Stifling a scream, she closed her eyes waiting for the pain to ebb a bit and she would try to stand up again.
She put her hand in the back of her head and felt the wound and what seemed dry blood. The despair hit her and her breath became heavy. She needed to get out of there, but she couldn't move with that pain.
This time the scream came out louder and she could hear steps outside the room. The forms were indistinguishable but Laura was sure it was a man coming in front of her. Her instincts started to alert her a big danger. If living in streets teach her something is that a man, in front of a woman, or better, a young girl like her, never want just talk.
She curled herself in the corner of the bed just waiting for a hit or something, just wishing he didn't force her do anything.
Another wave of pain hit her, trying to avoid something she couldn't see added with the stress was just making her pain worst.
Please, don't hut me!! I...I...beg you! I...ju...just...Please...!! - It was the only words coming out of her mouth, she was hopping for mercy.
With her eyes closed she could feel the presence of that man (that she deduced by the perfume). He stayed away from her since her bed didn't receive an extra weight.
Hey! Calm down, I'm not going to do anything, I just wanna help you. You are hurt and I just want to help you.
Laura heard the sweet and calm voice telling her everything was going to be okay, and then her extinct alert just exploded inside of her. That was dangerous, she knew, nobody came that sweet without a propose.
I don't believe in you! Please just let me go...I cant offer you anything! - The hot tears where drying and her vision coming back to normal, and she could see what seemed a blond hair. But the ache was increasing with every movement she made. She just want that pain over, she just want to get out of there and return to her life.
Please, believe me. If you allow me I can help you! You need help and I don't believe you will get outside here, I'm your only chance for now. Please believe in me! Give me a chance.
The voice so sweet made her heart race slower and her body relaxed a little bit. Something in his voice brought her confidence. After all if he was intending to do something he would already had done.
Laura was so uncertain about everything but what choice did she have? Like he said he was her best chance.
She didn't low her guard, if turns out necessary she needed to be ready to run.
The pain increased and she screamed again. She felt him trying to get closer to her but at the same time didn't coming, he was trying to not scare her. Laura reunited her last strength to make a question.
Where...where am I? And..who...who are you?
My name is Ross, and you are in my house. I found you and brought you here.
Laura tried to ask more questions but her body it wasn't complaining. She started to get dizzy, the vision turning black but she could hear something before passed out.
I promise I will take care of you!
Then everything turned black.
