Ok so I feel like since he became the king of the koopas, having a heir to the throne would be very important and he had him when he was 21 technically
I also headcanon his wife and the mother of jr left after fulfilling her royal duties of birthing a heir since they just weren't a good match
I feel like they were matched up together when they were jr's age or younger and got married at 18-19
