Her college...

As soon as they reached the gate, a boy threw a pamphlet towards the first girl and the very next moment disappeared among the crowd.
With this sudden action both the girls were startled. Immediately her friend held her..
'Alaknanda , are you okay??'
She nodded positively.
The other girl Radhika started cursing the boy on bicycle but Alaknanda was quiet and then the pamphlet caught her attention...
She kept it in her bag and asked Radhika to head towards class as they were getting late.
Radhika seeing the seriousness of Alaknanda's face didn't asked any questions..

Soon after attending all classes they reached home, they were rushing towards Alaknanda's room, but halted by voice of an elderly woman...

'Nandu and Bandhu( for Radhika) you are back??'

This was the voice of Badi Maa , Alaknanda's aunt(father's sister)
"Jiii" both replied with smile and told her that they are hungry as hell and requested to prepare something delicious.

Entering her room she took out the pamphlet, that was an invitation to a grand Banquet organised by the British Officials of Durgapuri.

Both girls fumed with anger looking at that piece of paper...
They have always been critical of British suppressive policies. In the recent years these policies saw a dramatic change in nature from being  beneficiary to colonial government to mainly being exploitative for Indians.

They heard a knock on the door, immediately hid the pamphlet and composed themselves.
There stood Badi Maa with delicious thaali prepared for them.
Alaknanda hugged and thanked her for always being there for her.

Alaknanda's father Satish Chandra Mitra was a well known merchant, they were not lavishly rich but they were well off. Her father was way ahead of his times in thinking , he sent his daughter to college and persuaded his friend/neighbor for further education of Radhika, whereas other girls of their age were already married.
Alaknanda's mother died 8 years ago, since then Badi Maa is mother figure to her...
