"Marky?" Scott asks shyly.

Mark looks up from his computer, smiling at his boyfriend. "Hey, sunshine," he says.

Scott blushes at the nickname.

"Can you come down to the piano?" Scott asks. "I wanna show you somethin'."

Mark furrows his brows. "A bit early in the day for songwriting, isn't it?" He teases.

Scott giggles. "I've actually been working on this one for a long time."

"Yeah?" Mark asks, shutting his laptop. "I can't wait to hear it."

Scott grabs Mark's hand and kisses his cheek, and Mark giggles. "Baby!" He squeals.

Scott smiles. "Okay. I'm gonna play it for you. Ahh, let's go," he says, a bit jittery.

"You okay, my love?" Mark asks, as they walk downstairs.

"Y-yeah," Scott says. "Okay. Here goes," they sit down at the piano.

Scott starts playing a lovely introduction on the piano.

forgive me for being so forward
i wrote a song for you

Mark giggles cutely, kissing Scott's shoulder.

cause i need to ask you just four words
oh, but before i do
can i have a minute, two or three, oh
cryin' makes the chorus hard for me

Mark pouts at the thought of Scott getting emotional.

and it's just some simple notes and rhymes, oh
but i want it perfect you'll see why
forever is not enough time
four years feel like four seconds went by

Mark smiles again as he realizes Scott wrote this about their four year anniversary a few weeks ago.

forever i'll remember that night
four words changed the rest of my life
you said
"hello! how are you?"
in that way that you do

well, fast forward four years and i've got four words for you too

Scott pauses.

"I can't do this."

Mark frowns. "What? Baby, the song is beautiful."

Scott looks at Mark. "I...I can't. Not when it's so high stakes. I'm sorry."

Mark looks at Scott, confused. "What makes it so—?"

He looks at the lyric sheet.

can i marry you? ❤️

"I-oh," Mark says.

"W-what?" Scott asks. Then he follows Mark's gaze. "Shit," Scott says. "I'm sorry, Marky. If you're not ready, I...I can wait for you. I know it was a lot to lose Mason a few years ago, so I'll wait for you, baby. Just know...I want nothing more than to spend the rest of my life with you."

Mark's lip quivers at how nervous Scott is. "Scotty, baby," he coos. "My love, look at me?"

Scott meets Mark's gaze.

Nervous.

Mark leans in and kisses Scott. "I would give anything to spend the rest of my life with you." He says. "Mason? Mason wasn't this," he says. "Mason was a college boyfriend turned long term, but then I met you, Scotty."

Scott nods, a few tears slipping down his cheeks.

"And this? Us? I've never done anything that felt so right. My love, you're my endgame. You're everything to me."

Scott nods.

Mark smiles. "Will you finish singing for me?" He asks sweetly.

Scott nods shakily, and continues on the piano, despite his voice being thick with tears.

well, fast forward four years and i've got four words for you too
can i marry you?

Mark grins from ear to ear.

well i'm not a fortune teller
but i had a dream last night
it was christmas at rockefeller
there was a girl wide eyed, oh
she asked if she could hold our hands
'til she felt strong enough to stand
i know that it was just a dream
but one day the two of us could become three

Now, Mark feels emotional. He feels a few tears slip out of his eyes at the thought of starting a family with Scott.

forever is not enough time
four years feels like four seconds went by
forever i'll remember that night
four words changed the rest of my life
you said
"baby, i love you"
in that way that you do
well, fast forward four years and i've got four words for you too
can i marry you
oh
can i marry you
oh
can i marry you

Mark is back to smiling. He's never felt so loved, ever.

one day
when our hair is turnin' grey
and we're too weak to find the strength to say those three words
well you know i'll find a way
cause i love you
and i'll love you till my dying day
mmm

well i think it's time for those four words
so don't mind if i do
can i marry you?

Scott finishes the piano part, and looks over at Mark.

"Oh, sweetheart," he frowns. "I'm sorry I made you cry."

"Starting a family together?" Mark says, more tears slipping out. "Growing old together?" He asks. "Sign me up." He laughs through his tears, and Scott chuckles, despite his own tears.

"I love you," Scott says.

"I love you so much, Scotty," Mark says, trying to get himself together. "I love you so incredibly much."

"If you'll take me up on my offer," Scott starts, "I want to sing this to you at our wedding."

Mark nods shakily. "That's a dream, baby. How did I get so lucky to be with you?"

Scott kisses Mark's forehead. "I ask myself that every single moment."
