Chapter 8

The King

The next day Kaida woke up feeling two arms around her.

"You had me worry yesterday," The Darkling whispered in her ear.

"I'm fine now," she said the same way.

"You need to inform me if you are injured, Kaida," he said more seriously. Kaida kept quiet.

"How is Alina?" she asked changing the subject.

"Today she is meeting the King so we have to get ready," he said standing up.

"Does she know?" Kaida asked him sitting on the bed.

"No," The Darkling answered. Kaida rolled her eyes. "Can you do me a favor?"

"Yes, of course," she said, paying attention.

"Can you keep an eye on her?, make sure it is doing alright?" he asked, looking into her eyes.

"Yes, of course,"

"Thank you," he said before giving her a kiss and leaving the room.

Kaida got up and started to get ready with her black kefta to go see Alina. When she was ready she walked out of her room and through the corridors until she arrived at Alina's room.

"Make time!" Kaida heard Alina 's voice shout. "I've covered almost two hundred miles on horseback. I haven't had a good night's sleep in a week, and I've nearly been killed twice. So before I do anything else, you're going to have to tell me who you are and why it's so very important that you get my clothes off,"

Kaida decided to knock at that moment and enter the room.

"It's everything okay?" she asked with a smile.

"You tell me," Alina snapped.

"Okay. Alina, this in Genya and in less than an hour, you will be presented to the King,"

"And it's my job to make you look presentable," Genya ended saying.

They finally managed to get Alina prepared and Kaida, Genya and her walked together to meet with the Darkling.

"I'm sorry about what I said the other day," Alina apologized.

"It 's fine. All the people in this Palace want to know my story but no one does. It's normal that you want to know the people that you are going to be with from now on," Kaida said kindly.

They entered the hall and every eye went to them. Kaida rolled her eyes when she saw a couple of Grisha walking towards them.

"I am Sergei Beznikov." a Grisha in red robes said.

"I'm— "

"I know who you are, of course," Sergei interrupted, making Kaida look at him with annoyance. "Come, let me introduce you. You'll be walking with us. And you too Kaida, I want to have the girlfriend of The Darkling by my side, that way I'm more important," he said, taking Alina by the elbow and trying to take Kaida's too but she moved away.

"Touch me and you will see your worst nightmare," she threatened. "I'm not a trophy you can walk with to feel important," Kaida said angrily.

"Saints girl, you need to calm down," Genya whispered to her.

"Great, now Marie," Kaida said, annoyed looking at the girl with a blue kefta who was coming.

"She is a Summoner, Sergei," Marie said. "She walks with us,"

"They don't realize that it doesn't matter what they want. No?" Kaida told Genya ignoring the conversation the others were having.

"They are like puppies after a toy," Genya compared making Kaida smile.
