Ch. 4 - Amanda's Perspective on Perry's Return

Amanda's laughter mingled with Celeste's as they shared a light moment, a pleasant change from the emotional heaviness they had faced. The unexpected sound of a car pulling into the driveway made Amanda glance towards the window, but she quickly dismissed it as their food delivery arriving early.

"What is going on here?" Perry's enraged voice boomed through the room as he burst through the front door.

Amanda's heart leaped into her throat, and she shot to her feet, staring at Perry's furious expression. She glanced at Celeste and saw fear etched on her face.

"Perry, you're home early! We were just—" Celeste stammered, clearly caught off guard.

"Just what?" Perry interrupted, his eyes fixed on Amanda with a mix of anger and confusion.

Amanda's mind raced, her professional instincts kicking in as she sought to defuse the situation. "Perry, I understand that this might be surprising, but there's an explanation."

"I'd like to hear it, then!" Perry growled, his fists clenched and his stance aggressive.

Despite the anger emanating from Perry, Amanda's determination to protect both her and Celeste's integrity strengthened her resolve. She looked at Perry, calmly laying out the evolution of her relationship with Celeste, explaining the need for new boundaries, and their choice to pursue a friendship.

Perry's rage slowly ebbed, replaced by a skeptical and questioning demeanor. "You're just friends now?" he asked, his voice tinged with disbelief.

"Yes," Amanda answered, her voice firm, but her heart aching at the unspoken truth. "Friends. Nothing more."

But as she spoke, she felt Perry's eyes probing her, as though he were searching for any hidden truths. The remainder of the conversation was a delicate dance, filled with reassurances, but Amanda couldn't shake the feeling that Perry's trust had been shattered.
